We are overjoyed to honor our very own Gabrielle Flihan, who was recognized last night at the Women's Fund of Herkimer and Oneida Counties' Power of the Purse event with Baird's Dream, Achieve, Inspire Award!

Gabrielle, our Regional Director of Client Care, has dedicated her entire career to shaping the mission of Daughter for Hire since her college days. Her mother, Denise Flihan, is the owner of Daughter for Hire, and founder Kathleen Rutishauser who has been like a second mother to Gabrielle, nominated her for this award. During her acceptance speech, Gabrielle got a laugh from the crowd when she shared that she truly is a "daughter for hire!"

Gabrielle has a genuine heart for helping others and cares deeply about the seniors and families we serve. She’s passionate about making more resources available to caregivers in both the Mohawk Valley and the Capital District, including starting Caring for the Caregiver. A monthly program and support group that offers local caregivers a place to find support, encouragement, education, and connection.

As part of the award, Baird provides a $500 donation to an organization of each recipient's choice. Gabrielle selected the Alzheimer's Association, a cause close to her heart and to the families we serve.

Gabrielle, we appreciate you and your heart for helping families. We celebrate you—this recognition is well-deserved. Congratulations!

"Don't correct them. Join them."

That piece of advice from Sheila Ohstrom, Co-Founder of Living with Dementia, is one of the most powerful shifts a caregiver can make when communicating with a loved one living with dementia.

When someone tells you the sky is purple, the instinct is to correct them. But Sheila encourages caregivers to do something different. Enter their reality instead.

"You might say, 'It really is a beautiful color today,' and then gently redirect."

Correcting someone with dementia can lead to frustration, embarrassment, and agitation, for them and for you. But meeting them where they are, in their reality, in that moment, preserves their dignity and keeps the connection intact.

As Sheila puts it: "You can't rationalize with a broken brain. But you can meet them where they are."

That simple shift from correcting to connecting can change everything about the tone of a moment. If you are caring for someone with dementia, we want you to know that our Care Companions are trained to help.

Each year, Daughter for Hire holds annual training for our Care Companions, providing an opportunity to connect with one another, build relationships, and continue learning about Alzheimer’s, dementia, and effective communication strategies.

We believe ongoing education is essential to ensuring our Care Companions feel confident and informed so they can provide exceptional care and support to our clients and their families.

A special thank you to Megan from the Northeastern New York Chapter and Tina from the Central New York Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association for sharing their knowledge and expertise with our team! The training was incredibly informative, and everyone walked away with valuable insights they can apply in their work.

We are grateful for our continued partnership and for the dedication of our Care Companions to learning and growing in the care they provide! 💜

Caregivers are in survival mode.

Not because they are weak. Because they are doing an enormous job, often alone, often without a break, and often without anyone asking how they are doing.

The caregivers who reach out before things become a crisis almost always wish they had made that call even sooner. You do not have to wait for a crisis to reach out. Getting support early is not giving up. It is one of the wisest things a caregiver can do, for their loved one and for themselves.

If you are in survival mode right now, we are here to help.

Caregiver Tip: Make a “Favorites” List for Mom or Dad

Sometimes it’s the little things that make a good day.

Keep a list of Mom or Dad’s favorites: their coffee order, favorite takeout, TV shows, music, places they like to go, snacks they love, or activities they enjoy.

Keep it on your phone and share it with siblings, family members, or anyone else who spends time with them.

The next time someone asks, “What should we do today?” or “What can I bring Mom?” you’ll have plenty of ideas ready to go. And everyone gets to know them a little better, too.
