Congratulations, Director Walker!!!!

The Emergency Communications Center is proud to announce that Tangela Walker has been appointed Acting Director of Emergency Communications, effective October 1, 2026.

Tangela steps into this role following the retirement of Randy Beeman. She has served as Assistant Director for the past five years and brings more than 24 years of emergency communications operations experience to the position.

She holds a Master of Public Administration (MPA) from North Carolina Central University and has earned multiple certifications throughout her career in the emergency dispatch field.

Please join us in congratulating Tangela on this new leadership role! We look forward to her continued leadership, dedication, and commitment to public safety and operational excellence.

False information spreads like wildfire, especially when the headline is more sensational than the facts.

That’s why it is so important to hear directly from the source of truth.
New Orleans 9-1-1 is **NOT replacing human 9-1-1 professionals with AI.** AI is being used as a tool in a very specific circumstance to help triage duplicate calls related to already-reported motor vehicle crashes when call takers are busy.

There is a BIG difference between **replacing people with technology** and **using technology to support people.**

As someone who has spent more than two decades in 9-1-1 and now works at the intersection of public safety and technology, I believe we need thoughtful conversations about AI, its capabilities, limitations, guardrails, and impact on the people doing this work. But those conversations have to begin with accurate information.

Technology should support the mission. It should help our 9-1-1 professionals work more effectively, reduce unnecessary workload, and ultimately help get the right resources to people faster.

Before we share the headline, let’s understand the technology.
