Pride Check!

Growing up in rural Montana, I was raised to believe that if you can do it yourself, you should. Change your own oil. Mow your own lawn. Handle it all.

That mindset followed me straight into childcare ownership… and guess what? It made me the biggest bottleneck in my business.

Because I could do everything, I did everything—and the balls started dropping fast.

If you're wearing the "I can do it all" badge of honor, consider this your reminder:
You’re not supposed to be good at everything.

You have a zone of genius—your unique brilliance—and that’s where you need to stay.

Do the pride check. Get out of your head. Delegate the rest.
You don’t need to carry it all alone.

Another tip in appreciating your staff, childcare owners! (Something you have never heard before!)

Create a “You Were Caught!” board in the break room or hallway—but with a twist. 📸

Instead of just writing what they did, capture it in the moment.

Take candid photos of your staff doing incredible, everyday things—like comforting a crying child, staying late to help clean, sharing a laugh with a co-teacher, or jumping in without being asked.

Print the photos and post them on the board with a caption that starts with:
“You were caught…”

Example:
“You were caught comforting a child so gently.”
“You were caught staying late to clean up the art room.”
“You were caught making everyone laugh on a tough day.”

This creates a living, visual wall of appreciation. It’s not just words—it’s memories, proof, and pride all wrapped in one.

Would you try this?

When you appreciate your staff, there are things you do.

But what about the things you should NOT do?

Appreciation is more than a moment. It’s how you make your people feel, long after the workday ends.

The biggest mistake we see child care programs making right now?

Sending new hires into classrooms with zero orientation.

No training. No expectations. No support.
And then we wonder why turnover is so high.

Saying “we don’t have time” doesn’t make it less risky.
Skipping onboarding has become the biggest liability in early childhood programs today.

Consistency isn’t optional—it’s essential.

Out of ideas on how to appreciate your staff?

I have one word for you... “Gratitude"

But this time, from the parents to the staff.

Secretly collect short thank-you notes from parents saying what they love about the staff and how grateful they are. Paste it on a portion of the wall and let the staff see it as a surprise!

It’s unexpected and deeply affirming to hear appreciation from those they serve.
When appreciation comes from the families you serve every day, it hits different. 💛

So if you’re looking for a heartfelt (and budget-friendly) way to uplift your team, this is it.

Because sometimes, the most powerful “thank you” doesn’t come from a paycheck, but from the people whose lives they’ve touched.

If your staff could text you their unfiltered thoughts… would it look something like this?

Staff retention doesn’t start with raises and resumes.

It starts with recognition, relationships, and real respect.

Want more texts like this?
✅ Be observant
✅ Be human
✅ Be present

Sometimes all it takes is asking:
“How’s your day really going?”

05/03/2025

Imagine this:

Your staff brag about where they work.
They tell their friends, “I’m supported. I’m seen. I love my team.”
They stay not just for the paycheck, but for the purpose.

That’s not some impossible fantasy, it’s what happens when you build a childcare culture that works.

Here’s how:
🌱 Start staff meetings with a personal check-in.
🪴 Offer mentoring opportunities.
🌟 Shout out small wins weekly.
🤝 Involve your team in decisions.

Retention isn’t a policy. It’s a feeling.

Make your center the place good people never want to leave.

Childcare professionals don’t just want pizza parties.
(Okay... maybe sometimes 🍕😄)

But what do they really want?

Respect.
A voice in decisions.
Room to grow.
A safe team culture.

None of these require a huge budget, just a shift in mindset. YOUR mindset as someone who is in childcare leadership.

Empower your teachers. Honor their experience. Celebrate their ideas.
Because when your staff feels valued, they bring their best every day.

Retention happens when your team feels at home, not stuck.

When a great staff member resigns, don’t wait for the exit interview to find out why.

By then, it’s already too late.

Childcare professionals often leave emotionally long before they hand in their resignation.

Try this instead:
🗣️ Monthly check-ins (not evaluations)
☕ Open-door chats
🙌 Weekly "wins & wishes" circles

These touchpoints show your team that you care before they’re thinking of walking away.

Retention isn’t reactive—it’s proactive. Build connection before you need to rebuild your team.

Hear us out

If your childcare center is struggling to keep good staff, look past the perks and pay for a second—and look at the culture.

Are your staff heard?

Do they feel seen and appreciated beyond Teacher Appreciation Week?

Are they supported when life happens, because it will?

Culture is the soil your team grows in.

If it's dry and toxic, even the most talented hires won’t stay rooted.

Retention isn’t just about hiring the right people, it’s about creating a place where the right people want to STAY.
