Tree Down / Power Lines – Watermill Road

Today at approximately 11:30 AM, Shady Grove Fire Rescue responded to the 200 block of Watermill Road for a large tree that had fallen across the roadway, taking down power, cable, and telephone lines.

Despite clear weather conditions, the large tree simply fell, creating a significant hazard and completely blocking the roadway.

Shady Grove firefighters controlled traffic and secured the scene while Dixie Electric worked to make the electrical lines safe and restore power. Jones County Beat 1 crews then worked to remove the tree and clear the roadway.

The scene took approximately two hours to completely clear.

We appreciate the cooperation and hard work of Dixie Electric and the Jones County Beat 1 crew in helping get the roadway reopened safely.

We currently have 21 members serving our department. We need more especially during the day.

We also have a Junior Firefighter Program for young people ages 16–17 who want to learn about the fire service, serve their community, and build valuable skills. Currently, we have 3 Junior Firefighters. We need more.

A huge thank you to DripDrop and the National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC) for their generous donation of DripDrop hydration packets this year!

With the extreme heat we've been experiencing, staying properly hydrated is critical for the safety and well-being of our firefighters. These hydration packets will help our members replace fluids and electrolytes during training, emergency responses, and extended incidents, allowing them to stay healthy and perform at their best.

Firefighting places tremendous stress on the body. High temperatures, heavy protective gear, and intense physical activity can cause firefighters to lose significant amounts of water and electrolytes through sweat. An oral rehydration solution like DripDrop can help replace those fluids more effectively than water alone in some situations.

Motor Vehicle Crash Response

Shady Grove Fire Rescue responded this evening to a single-vehicle motor vehicle crash after a truck left the roadway and struck a tree.

The driver sustained moderate injuries but was ambulatory when first responders arrived on scene. After receiving initial care from firefighters and EMS personnel, the driver was transported by EMSERV EMS to South Central Regional Medical Center for further evaluation and treatment.

Shady Grove Moss Road remained closed for approximately two hours while Holifield Wrecker safely removed the vehicle from beneath a tree that had fallen onto it following the crash.

We appreciate the assistance of the Jones County Sheriff's Department, EMSERV EMS, and Holifield Wrecker in bringing the incident to a safe conclusion.

Each fall, Shady Grove Fire Rescue is actively involved in numerous community events focused on fire prevention and public safety education. Our firefighters visit local schools to teach children about fire safety, participate in several community fall festivals, assist with Lowe's Safety Day activities, and host our annual Halloween event at our fire station. In addition to these events, we take part in many other outreach opportunities throughout the year to educate residents on smoke alarms, home escape planning, severe weather safety, and emergency preparedness. These events allow us to build strong relationships with our community while helping keep families safe through education and prevention.
