FMCSA’s temporary paper medical card backup is ending for most CDL and commercial learner’s permit holders on October 12, 2026.
After that date, drivers licensed in 49 states and Washington, D.C., will no longer be able to rely on a paper Medical Examiner’s Certificate as temporary proof of medical status. Instead, medical certification will depend on the electronic system used by FMCSA and state licensing agencies.
Alaska will be the only exception. Drivers with an Alaska-issued CDL or CLP may continue using a paper medical card for up to 60 days after it is issued through October 12, 2027.
The change does not alter DOT physical standards. It changes how most drivers prove their medical qualification.
