Brokers are not a vending machine. They are people making fast decisions under pressure. When they need a truck covered, they move toward carriers who make their job easier.

How you talk to brokers determines what you get paid.
Most carriers call brokers the same way.
“Hey is that load still available?”
That’s it. No introduction. No equipment detail. No leverage.
Here’s what a stronger call sounds like:
“Hi, calling on behalf of [Carrier Name] — we have a 26-foot box truck with liftgate available [date] in [city]. Looking at your load to [destination]. Is that still open and what’s the best rate you can work with us on?”
That one call does four things:
— Establishes you as a professional operation
— Tells them exactly what equipment they’re getting

Here’s why.
When you call a broker and accept the posted rate without pushing back, you’re telling them their first number was fair.
It almost never is.
Brokers post rates with negotiation margin built in. That margin is there for carriers who ask for it. Most don’t.
A few things that move rates on box truck freight:
— Liftgate availability when they need it
— Same-day or next-day availability when they’re stuck
— Willingness to take a tight delivery window
— Equipment that fits when nothing else does
You don’t need to be aggressive. You need to be specific.
“That rate doesn’t work for us at the current fuel situation out of that market. What’s the best you can do?” is a complete sentence that moves money.
Know your number before you call. Know what the lane is worth. Don’t just take what they post.
