Real Security or "Feel good Security". Understand the difference:
Triggered by multiple, recent and tragic events in Gwinnett County, personal security has moved to the top of concerns for many people. The discussions revolve around surveillance cameras, alarm systems, panic buttons, and last but not least, carrying of fi****ms. None of which is any good if the proper MINDSET is not there.
The sophisticated alarm system is useless, if you don't pay attention to what’s happening around you, on your way to and from your car to the door of your home or business.
The firearm in the glove compartment is useless, if you don’t have it on you when you need it. Even worse, if you don’t know how to manipulate it with confidence when faced with a high-stress, life or death situation.
The fancy surveillance system is useless, if it records the violent crime against you, but is not utilized to prevent it. And so on, … and so on
The sad reality, after tragic events, as time passes, everybody goes back to “business as usual” until the next tragedy. There is an inherent lack of discipline in practicing “personal security”. Most people look at Law Enforcement to protect them. Law Enforcement response time in the US ranges from 5-10 minutes depending on location.
The most important element of good personal security is MINDSET, supported by technology, procedures, protocols and training (especially in business settings).
Security needs to be a way of life. Security needs to be simple and effective. It has to fit into an existing lifestyle and business environments. The focus has to be on early detection, deterrence and prevention.
Times have changed for the worse for a number of reasons. In the end, it is up to you to protect yourself effectively.
Practice situational awareness and stay safe out there.
