When I was a teen, my parents moved from California to Denver. Overnight I lost all my friends and found myself in a beautiful mountain home on 1.5 acres… thirty minutes from the nearest gas station.
That’s when I realized:
If I EVER wanted to have a social life I needed to buy a car.
It was the first time in my life I began to wonder about the concept of having a career. And believe me, it wasn’t an easy problem to solve when you’re living in the middle of nowhere and attending a tiny private school with only 2-3 classmates your age.
I consulted my Girl Gang (mom, godmother, girlfriends) asking their opinion of what type of work I should pursue.
And the most common advice I heard was “find work you’re passionate about”.
The only things I was really passionate about were dancing and books 🤷♀️
Neither of which were going to be easy monetizing from my isolated mountain home.
(This was before social media, remember!)
So I settled for cleaning houses (boring, but something I found I had a talent for) and baking, which I loved.
By the time I was 16, I’d earned enough to buy my first car, after which I quickly decided to shut down my cleaning business. I didn’t need that kind of money anymore.
It was my dad who suggested, “Why don’t you keep your business, but hire others to clean?”
I thought about it and decided my goal was to build a business big enough that I could work only a few hours a day and read novels the rest of the time 😆
But no matter how much I scaled my business, it never reached that 😢 There was always some new “emergency” 🚨 some new reason I “had” to work on it.
I eventually sold that business and traveled the world, volunteering for causes I believed in for ten years… but never forgot that original goal.
I love reading and wanted a lifestyle that could support my reading habit!
It wasn’t until I began to think like an investor (instead of a hustling business owner) that I finally built the lifestyle of my dreams.
Now that I finally have that, it brings me so much satisfaction to spend my days wandering in bookstores, 📚 buying as many books as I please, and reading 2-3 full length novels per week.
I even started writing stories of my own, and now have four published fantasy novels (under a pen name) and donate my time every week to helping authors finish, publish and sell their books!
Point is, whatever your goal is… investing can get you there.
You just have to start.
