How to tell if an attacker is impersonating a corporation.

In case of phishing attacks, the domain they use as their payload comprises of multiple words, such as "facebook-open". This is to manipulate what the link says to so that they manage to fool at least one person.

They use a Gmail/Yahoo, or even a temporary/throwaway address from temporary email generators. The IRS for example would NOT use a personal Gmail to send tax alerts.

Also, if they're sending something from WhatsApp for example, it's aways a scam. IRS nor government agencies would use such chat & instant messaging apps such as WhatsApp, Discord, or Telegram to warn customers about missing taxes, or expired insurance, etc. These are also common robocall patterns.

Social Engineering

Social engineering exploits our natural tendencies, curiosity, fear, or kindness to bypass security. It’s not about cracking code; it’s about cracking people.

Today we're going to be ripping apart this fake Norton LifeLock email that comes from a strange Gmail with this fancy name called "Billing*System".

This immediately raises a red flag on Gmail. Who at Norton would use a Gmail to send bill statements? You would use their official domain email address to send bill statements, not a random Gmail.

Let's take a look at the fake LifeLock Gmail and see what we get.
*The number seems to be a randomly selected number unrelated to Norton. Norton and corporates would use the 833-area code. If the number showing isn't even the one showing on their website, it's definitely a fake.

Secondary, the Gmail used is also randomly selected with patterns such as FirstNameLastName123. I used other examples on Reddit to confirm that was the case.

Also, if you look closely, you notice some weird artifacts floating around on this statement. There are invisible white letters floating in between words. This is an obvious sign of photo manipulation tools to splice stuff into an image to give it the illusion of being a real image. This is in the form of an image, rather than a PDF.

The rest of this is complete garbage. If you receive an email about a bill statement and it mentions a Gmail that ISN'T affiliated with you, that's a scam.

Norton and McAfee will only send emails from their official domains, not from random Gmail addresses.

The Windows Security section of the Settings will always tell you if there's any action needed, like account protection, firewalls, and if there's any threats detected.

Remember, viruses don't always come in the form of .exe or background services, they can also come in various other forms like malicious domains that inject notifications onto Microsoft Edge, and so on.

One example is ransomware attacks, which is mentioned on this menu regarding "virus & threat protection" on OneDrive. Ransomware attacks are where an attacker demands money to release files. These aren't just limited to data breaches but can also include people impersonating others like the FBI or IRS.

The IRS will NOT ask you to buy gift cards like Razer Gold, or request $100 to release a computer's files. These are common examples of cyber impersonation, where attackers claim to be someone that they're not.

Every year, there's people advocating for privacy on the Internet, but thing is though, you have no control on where that Internet data goes in and out, whether it be datacenters from all around the world or random people. You have to learn how to avoid malicious scam sites and trusting people that you don't know, especially when they offer things that are too good to be true.

And then we got this, Really Wireless, a carrier who thinks that they have the right to charge THIS much outright for service that could be matched by $45-55 dollar offerings from other MVNOs like Visible, Metro, & Cricket. I don't care if there's a limited time offer or if they fake that "next 5,000 subscribers" thing for the Sponsored pages, they do NOT offer any multi-line discounts, making it an absolute terrible value. I stumbled upon this from a Facebook sponsored ad, and I'm going to look into it so you don't have to.

Before taxes/fees, this Limitless plan is $99 a month and only includes an atrocious 10GB of hotspot. That is laughable, and with a price point comparable to the most expensive premium plans like T-Mobile's Experience Beyond. Keep in mind they use T-Mobile's cellular towers as this is what their Facebook ads are actually based on.

You get a lot more bang for your buck if you went straight to the Experience Beyond plan with T-Mobile. You get the best priority data, unlimited hotspot that can replace your home Internet, and even better; satellite connectivity.

Fact. T-Mobile Experience Beyond is $260 for 5 lines with AutoPay
Really Limitless caps out at $495 for 5 lines. They do NOT offer any multi-line discounts, so you're spending $495 before taxes/flat-rate fees for 5 lines on Really. That is atrocious! You could've saved that money for like food or something. I can tell you NOBODY is going to spend this much on Really Wireless. There's no point on that, especially when Experience Beyond is right there with much more bang for your buck.

The idea of having a MVNO advertise privacy as a selling point is just silly to me. especially when their features are already crucial parts of other carriers. International calling or roaming is kind of niche, but then again, nobody's going to spend $99 before taxes/fees on this kind of MVNO that already has a niche community that is only there because of the Facebook ads.

Simply put, as BrainPop said in Digital Etiquette, once something is out, it's out. The only reason that you would use a VPN is to connect to your corporate network to access data stored on those servers, etc, or in the case of NordVPN programs, to access region-locked streaming services. Be sure to renew your passwords every so often incase your accounts were subject to one of those data breaches.

The fact is you really don't need any other antivirus to be safe on the Internet.

All you need is Windows Defender and proper knowledge on how to avoid shady websites. The obvious signs of those sites include really long domain names and those that state things that are too good to be true.

You know what costs corporations yearly and their reputation as well?

The answer is data breaches. Every year, data breaches form via vulnerabilities in the system that have successfully fooled corporate staff. Data breaches don't just target confidential corporate data, but also sensitive information like SSNs, credit card numbers, and even addresses as well.

Beware of suspicious emails, especially those that come from obnoxiously long domain names. These are one of the most common payloads when it comes to these huge data breaches.

Every year, there are malicious attacks that come from all over the world. Often, these kind of attacks come from compromised servers and sites with really long domain names.
