Adolf Lange Jr , his wife Nina Blanche Barker and their two daughters Mary Alice and Dorothea. Adolf Jr. took over the Lange Drug Store after is father fell from a ladder and broke his leg while inspecting the new tin ceiling and new electric lighting in 1910.

The Lange Business Center got it's name from the Lange Family that owned the Lange Drug Store from the 1870's to the 1930's.

Tomorrow, Sept. 26, the City of Leavenworth plans to close the Shawnee Street and Fourth Street intersection in downtown Leavenworth for a period of 21-28 days. If you need into the Lange Business Center for Beltone Hearing, Echelon Property Management or United Way at 400 Shawnee please contact them directly before arriving so they may assist you on the best route to get there.

Work at the 4th and Cherokee intersection is progressing quickly and this intersection is anticipated to open Oct. 2.

Beltone Hearing Aid Services, United Way and Echelon Property Management continue business as normal while the City of Leavenworth repairs the roads and replaces the sidewalks. Please use caution when using these companies/organizations inside the Lange Business Center.

In 1866 John Berg had erected the building you see standing today at 400 Shawnee Street in downtown Leavenworth, Kansas. He owned the building and the National Billiard Hall on the second floor and leased out the two storefronts on the first floor. John Berg’s stepson Jacob Schaefer (1855-1910) was introduced to billiards at the age of eleven and by the age of fifteen he became the best player in Leavenworth. Jacob was nicknamed “The Wizard” and started is professional career in 1873 and the following year became the Champion of Kansas. He continued winning championships and traveled the world before retiring in Colorado.

This door was recently removed from the bottom of the staircase to protect from harm. There are signatures from Mr. Mehl who was an apprentice under Theodore Egersdorff’s Central Drug Store in 1881, who later started the Corner Pharmacy at 5th and Delaware in 1905. This door also displays the signature of Adolf Lange from 1889. Mr. Lange for whom the building is named after Lange Business Center ran an extremely successful pharmacy along with educating local physicians and pharmacist on modern medicine.

The old sidewalk has been removed at 4th and Shawnee. Can’t wait to see the finished project.

Road construction starts Monday, July 8th. 4th Street between Choctaw and Seneca will be CLOSED. Roads are being resurfaced, sidewalks and curbs are being replaced. Once completed there will be one lane each direction with turn lanes. We are excited for the much needed improvements. Photos are from past issues on 4th Street at Shawnee.
