The one great thing about Sokoo Natural Shea Butter is that itā€™s not just handcrafted... Each nut is hand-picked for excellence and sustainability.

Shea trees are extremely valuable to the community, they provide food, fuel and of course shea butter. For this reason we do not forcibly pick the shea fruit. Only fallen fruit is collected and after roasting, nuts that are not grade A quality are removed to be used for fuel. Itā€™s a very time consuming process, but worth it because our rich creamy butters are unmatched!

The traditional methods of producing Shea Butter here at Sokoo Natural is sustainable in a few ways.

1. Because the team is made up of the members of the community to which this tradition belongs, the profits directly impact the lives of the women and children of the community in a way thatā€™s not likely when it comes to factory made brands.

2. The quality of shea butter produced through traditional methods is also of higher quality since itā€™s not not chemically extracted.

3. Handmade or handcrafted shea butter is also more sustainable because at each stage, the waste is used for either fuel or for other products. For instance, the impurities that are skimmed off the top during the boiling process (shown here) is commonly used for fuel in lanterns or as the base to create blacksoap, another amazing skincare product.

Yellow Shea is often preferred because itā€™s the rawest form of Shea Butter. It hasnā€™t undergone any refinement so it contains all the natural nutrients of the Karite nut and has a powerful sweet, nutty aroma. Although it takes a bit more effort to melt, it lasts longer on the skin and hair so itā€™s seen as a superior moisture sealing agent.

Drying the shea nuts is one of the most important steps in producing Shea Butter. Here, a member of our team is using a roaster to dry the shea nuts. Using a roaster is one of the ways we ensure consistent quality while creating a much safer working environment for our team.

The freshly crushed shea nuts must be roasted to prepare them to release the oils, but traditional methods are dangerous and extremely labour intensive. It involved having a large pot over an open fire and having to stand close while stirring constantly. The stirrer would be at risk of inhaling smoke and getting burnt. Furthermore, some areas would be missed in the stir, preventing the oils from being released fully.
