Research shows that people are much more likely to take action because of a direct ask from someone that they already know. When we talk about “relational organizing,” we’re talking about using our own personal networks and one-on-one relationships to build power at the grassroots level. The power of trust and shared experiences means that relational organizing can help us to reach a wider audience and mobilize people much more effectively than other methods.

Focusing on our shared humanity truly is the heart of community organizing. While there is impactful action that can be taken by those in positions of power, there is also power in the trust that we have with one another at the individual level.

YOU have the power to make meaningful connections with others by sharing your own personal stories. Although disinformation and sensationalist politics are used to distract and divide us, the root of our beliefs and values still lies in our real, lived experiences. Sharing our own personal stories creates an authentic emotional connection. These stories don’t have to be big or perfect- they just have to be REAL.

Every movement for change begins with individual people like us coming together to share our experiences and take action. It might not feel like a single conversation can change the world, but the connections that we form with one another when we share our personal experiences are POWERFUL. The trust that we build together is what leads us to take action, both as individuals and as a community. And collective action leads to systematic change!

New professional bio!

Laura Marie (LM) Chacon Davis provides community engagement training and project management to grassroots organizations across the US and Canada, with a focus on deep canvassing. LM began her organizing career as an AmeriCorps service member in rural Tuscarawas County, Ohio. In 2019 they joined Down Home North Carolina’s first deep canvassing team to speak with rural and small-town voters about universal healthcare and undocumented immigrants. She went on to lead several pioneering deep canvassing projects, including the development of one-of-a-kind scripts that persuade over 1 in 3 people to support progressive environmental conservation and renewable energy policies. Laura Marie also ran for State Representative in their home of Warren County, Ohio, in 2024 - while pregnant with her first child! She holds a B.S. in Biology from Case Western Reserve University and a Master of Environmental Management from Duke University’s Nicholas School of the Environment.

The way fear-mongering jumps so quickly from xenophobia and racism to ableism, to queerphobia, to Islamaphobia, to misogyny, etc. is by design. It is intentional. Those in power will use anything and everything to try to divide us.

We can respond by pointing out this truth and reminding our neighbors (especially those who are susceptible to anti-diversity rhetoric) that we're all honest, hard working people who want to take care of our families. Whether someone is white or black or brown, or disabled, or trans doesn't change the fact that we have more in common with any person who has to work to put food on the table than we do with a billionaire who was born into wealth and has probably never had to fill out a job application in his life. And I can name a few prominent people who have WAY more money and power than any "DEI" program.

This is the richest country in the world. Why is it that companies with monopolies get to decide the price of gas and eggs while we're arguing over who's more deserving of a job that barely pays the bills? Something is not right here, and I don't think "diversity" is the problem.
