After more than thirty years in marketing, I've come to believe every business owner should ask just two questions.
First...
Do we have a systematic plan to generate enough qualified prospects over the next twelve months to hit our financial goals?
Second...
Can our team actually convert those prospects into paying customers?
Because if your marketing generates leads but your sales team can't close...
You've wasted your money.
And if your sales team is brilliant but nobody knows you exist...
You've got another problem.
Stop measuring applause.
Start measuring income.
Because businesses aren't built on compliments.
They're built on customers.

WHAT BUSINESS ARE YOU REALLY IN?
Have you ever asked yourself what business you're really in?
Most people get this completely wrong.
If you own a golf club, you'll probably say you're in the golf business. A lawyer says they're in law. A restaurant owner says food. A karate school says martial arts.
Wrong.

One of the biggest breakthroughs in my career came when I realized I wasn't in the karate business at all.
I was in the personal development business.
Karate was simply the delivery system.
Parents weren't buying punches and kicks. They were buying confidence for their kids. Discipline. Better focus at school. Protection from bullies. Higher self-esteem.
That single change transformed my advertising, my sales, and my business.
The same is true everywhere.
A golf club isn't really in the golf business. It's in the entertainment business, competing against vacations, restaurants, concerts, and every other way people can spend a Saturday.

A restaurant isn't selling food. It's selling memories, celebrations, and experiences people want to repeat.
So here's the question.
What business are you really in?
Not what product you sell.
Not what service you provide.
What problem do you solve? What transformation do you create? What emotional outcome are people actually paying for?

Figure that out, and your marketing becomes easier, your message becomes clearer, and your business becomes much harder to compete with.
Because people don't buy products.
They buy better versions of themselves.

What You Don't Know You Don't Know
One of the most thought-provoking quotes I've ever heard is this:
"You know what you know. You know what you don't know. But it's what you don't know you don't know that will kill you."
Think about that for a second.
Most entrepreneurs spend their lives worrying about the things they know they need to learn. Maybe it's AI. Maybe it's social media. Maybe it's sales, investing, leadership, or marketing.

Those aren't usually the things that destroy businesses.
The real danger comes from the blind spots.
Years ago, I worked with a golf club that was convinced they had a membership problem. The board wanted more advertising, more promotions, more exposure. They thought the answer was getting more people to hear about the club.
When we looked at the numbers, we discovered something shocking.

They already had plenty of inquiries.
People were calling.
People were visiting the website.
People were requesting information.
The real problem was that nobody was following up.
They didn't have a membership problem.
They had a conversion problem.
For years, they had been trying to solve the wrong problem.
And that's how most businesses struggle.
A company thinks it has a traffic problem when it really has a sales problem.
A hotel thinks it has an occupancy problem when it really has a positioning problem.
An entrepreneur thinks he needs more leads when he really needs a better system.

The lesson?
Stay curious.
Read books.
Ask questions.
Challenge your assumptions.
Because somewhere right now, one of your competitors is learning something you don't know.
And the biggest opportunity—or biggest threat—in your business today may be something you haven't even discovered exists yet.
That's why what you don't know you don't know is often the most expensive thing in your entire business.

THE FRENCH LOBSTER INCIDENT
One of the reasons I love France is that this country never stops giving me material.
Today I was having lunch with my friends Sarah and Sam beside the Canal du Midi in southern France. Beautiful day. Great restaurant. The special was a seafood salad.
Sarah ordered it.
I tried to order the same thing and was told they'd just sold the last one.
Of course they had.
Ten minutes later Sarah's seafood salad arrived, and this thing looked like Poseidon had emptied the Mediterranean onto a plate. Shrimp. Squid. Half a lobster. Lobster crackers. Tools. Equipment. It looked less like lunch and more like we were about to perform surgery.
Then Sarah noticed something.
The lobster was missing its big claw.
So she called the waitress over and politely asked, "Excuse me, where's the claw?"
The waitress stared at the lobster for a moment, disappeared into the kitchen, and returned a few minutes later with what was apparently the official explanation.
"The lobster was fighting in the tank and lost the claw."
That was it.
No apology.
No discount.
No free dessert.
No manager.
Just: "The lobster got into a fight. He lost."
Then came the greatest French shrug I've ever seen.
A shrug that basically said, "What do you want from me? The lobster had a rough day."
And honestly, I couldn't stop laughing.
Because in America there would be forms, apologies, customer-service training, and probably a corporate investigation into claw-related shortages.
In France?
The lobster lost a fight.
Now he's on your plate.
Life goes on.
And standing there beside the Canal du Midi, I started thinking maybe the French have figured something out.
Sometimes you lose a deal.
Sometimes you lose a relationship.
And sometimes you're a lobster who loses a claw five minutes before becoming the lunch special.
The French response?
A shrug.
And move on.
