You may have created countless job descriptions that stipulate a bachelor’s degree – or higher – is preferred, perhaps even required. But did you know you may also be holding yourself back in finding the top-tier talent that you’re seeking? Especially in this (still) tight job market – you may want to be a bit more flexible when you review resumes that include seemingly proven experience without that college degree.

How can you be sure a candidate is truly going to serve as an asset to your team? Place more emphasis on hiring for a candidate's specific skills or expertise. Ask detailed situational questions during an initial phone interview to determine if they have a real-world track record of success. If you need a team member who possesses more formal training, consider asking about apprenticeships, internships, or other accredited training programs that could meet your expectations.

Companies focused on innovation include leaders who understand the importance of an employee-driven culture.

This strategy has led to the rise of "intrapreneurship," or the practice of empowering employees to generate new ideas, giving employees the freedom and necessary resources for implementation.

For some companies, moving away from a traditional hierarchical structure -- top-down decision-making -- may be more challenging than for others.

Here are our three suggestions to help implement intrapreneurship in your company:

1. Identify decision-making roles in the company and determine a process to hold team members accountable for their decisions. That also includes how to troubleshoot or mentor staff as they hone their decision-making skills. You need to also clarify that certain decisions cannot or will not be delegated.

2. Establish or develop decision principles that serve as a guide rather than dictating a set of rules for employees to adhere to with their decision-making.

3. Take intentional steps to empower your team. Stagger the transition of responsibilities to build confidence in decision-making and recognize that delegating specific responsibilities can lead to greater organizational success in the long term.

According to a recent study, 61% of respondents over the age of 45 reported having seen or experienced age discrimination in their careers. This type of discrimination sometimes starts during the hiring process and can also negatively affect your company's culture and reputation.

Here are our 3 tips for avoiding age discrimination when hiring top talent.

1. Can a candidate really be overqualified? Instead of seeing that someone has too much experience, determine how their expertise can enhance your team. It's possible this person led teams for many years and may be ready -- and have the flexibility and confidence -- to be a valued team member instead.

2. Be sure your job descriptions are inclusive, and avoid using terms that suggest you prefer a younger candidate. Do you use words such as "digital native," "high energy," or even "recent college grad?" Focus instead on the required or preferred skills needed for success in the position. If you truly want to grow your team (and ultimately your company), you should have training in place to help new candidates learn unfamiliar software. You can also identify any transferrable skills the candidate may have that would benefit your team's work.

3. Discuss age diversity when you conduct diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) training. Many times we focus on gender and culture DEI -- but learning how to prevent ageism is just as important to review with your team. These efforts will cultivate a company culture that will set you apart from other companies recruiting hard-to-find quality top talent.

Did you know that unproductive meetings cost companies more than $37 billion each year? And with many meetings held online due to remote/hybrid workplaces, gathering far-flung team members to endure yet another unneeded meeting can be a source of frustration and, frankly, a waste of everyone's time.

However, meetings -- whether remote or not -- are still essential for the productivity of any company.

Here are our five tips to help you run more effective meetings.

1. Ensure the meeting is necessary. Yes, we have heard this before: could this have been discussed/reviewed in an email? Or does the issue require interactive discussion to make an informed decision to develop the next steps? Could you include the information that needs to be shared during a previously scheduled meeting?

2. Only invite those who absolutely need to be included. If individuals do not have anything to contribute to or learn from the meeting, their time can be best spent elsewhere.

3. Create an agenda and send it to your team before the meeting. This will keep everyone on task and move the meeting along in a timely manner. In addition, if brainstorming or ideas/solutions need to be brought to the meeting, team members can prepare beforehand and bring their suggestions.

4. Record the meeting or take notes, then share them with attendees afterward. This will allow others to refer to the notes if they have questions/clarifications and share with those who may need to have the information.

5. Determine action items. Meetings should include the next steps to propel progress. Assign the items to attendees and establish deadlines for the steps to be accomplished.

Giving feedback to your staff should be a regular part of growing and retaining your team members. But be sure to follow best practices so the culture of feedback is positive. Here are our suggestions.

1. Give clear and reasonable expectations to your employees before a project or task begins.

2. Don't save your feedback for your employees' quarterly reviews. Feedback should be a part of your day-to-day work environment. Feeling comfortable giving constructive feedback keeps your staff productive and moves the company forward.

3. Perform a self-review. Determine if your expectations are in line with your employees' abilities. In addition, encourage your employees to feel comfortable addressing any concerns they may have about you, their colleagues, or the company in general.

4. Avoid giving emotional feedback. If you aren't in the proper frame of mind to talk with your employee about their performance, take a few minutes before addressing the situation.

5. Be consistent in your feedback to all employees -- use uniform criteria, talk with employees at regular intervals, and be specific about what has been done correctly and what needs a bit more work.

To maintain a successful company means that you should think about all aspects of what makes an employee happy. One aspect that has come to light in the last couple of years: employee mental health and wellness.

Our long-time HR Manager, Shawna Biggars, SPHR, SCP shares why she believes in supporting this important workplace initiative.

"After 30+ years working in HR/Payroll, I am blessed to say that even on my worst day, I still love what I do. That doesn’t mean I don’t get stressed or overwhelmed, but it is a good reminder that our mental health is just as important as our physical health.

"In October of 2022, the U.S. Surgeon General released a statement indicating 76% of U.S. workers in a 2021 survey reported suffering at least one symptom of a mental health condition, and as a result, 81% reported they want workplaces that support mental health.

"Companies that recognize this need can become an employer of choice by engaging strategies such as encouraging employees to use their paid time off, cultivating a welcoming work environment, and providing robust Employee Assistance Programs. I’m grateful LSI Staffing does all those things and more."

Companies and top-tier talent are turning to TikTok to fill employment gaps. Yes, you read that correctly -- TikTok.

With more than 1 billion TikTok users -- many of them in the upcoming Gen Z workforce -- it may be beneficial to expand your presence to this social media channel. You may find a hidden talent pool that has little or no activity on more established channels.

What's more, candidates turn to TikTok for job leads, crafting and uploading resumes, and career advice.

And keep in mind that the culture of TikTok showcases the authenticity and creativity that a candidate can bring to a role. What are the candidate's true interests and beliefs? The insights you discover may be invaluable as you select the best candidate for your needs.
