Accidental Fire Displaces Round Hill Family
The Loudoun County Fire and Rescue Fire Marshal’s Office (LCFR-FMO) is offering fire prevention tips after an accidental fire heavily damaged a home on Tedler Circle.
Just after 11:30 a.m., Saturday, May 23, 2026, the Loudoun County Emergency Communications Center received a call reporting a structure fire in the 17000 block of Tedler Circle in Round Hill. Fire and rescue units from Purcellville, Hamilton, Philomont, Mount Weather, Leesburg, Clarke County, and command officers responded to the scene.
Firefighters arrived to find a two-story single-family home with fire visible from the front and sides of the structure. Fire crews quickly deployed hose lines to attack the fire and requested a Rapid Intervention Task Force to bring additional resources. Searches of the home confirmed all occupants were out of the structure. Crews worked to extinguish the fire that had extended into the living space of the home. Once the fire was extinguished, firefighters remained on scene for an extended period overhauling the structure.
The LCFR-FMO investigation determined the fire was accidental, caused by the improper disposal of recently used wood chips from a smoker into a plastic container in the garage. Damages to the home are estimated at $348,480 ($211,200 structure, $137,280 contents). Two adults, three juveniles, four cats, and two dogs were displaced and are staying locally. There were no injuries to civilians or first responders.
As we move into summer and grilling season begins, ensure your equipment is ready and follow these important safety measures when cooking outdoors:
• For propane grills, check the gas tank for leaks by applying a soap and water solution to the hose. A propane leak will release bubbles. If it’s leaking, turn off the gas tank and the grill. If the leak stops, get the grill serviced by a professional before using it. If the leak does not stop, call 911.
• Keep your grill clean by removing grease or fat buildup from the grills and in trays below the grill.
• Ensure grills are at least 15 feet from the structure, away from siding, deck railings and anything flammable, and a safe distance from eaves and overhanging branches.
• Keep children and pets at least 3 feet away from the grilling area and never leave a grill unattended.
• If you use starter fluid when charcoal grilling, only use charcoal starter fluid. Never add lighter fluid or any other flammable liquids to the fire.
• Most importantly, when you are finished grilling or smoking, let the coals cool completely before disposing into a metal container, away from any structures.
