Hank Smith joked that it’s been so long since he’s been to the gym, he should probably start referring to it as James.

That was once me too. But, I’m now years into following my 2023 New Year’s resolution to work out every day.

Since I can’t say that about my other goals, I took the time to understand why that goal stuck and how to leverage that going into 2026.

Here are 3 tips that helped

Edward Stanworth’s front row seat observing leaders across the globe, and his fascination with interplay between leadership and culture, inspired him to join Global Leader Group earlier this year.

Ed’s passion for meeting interesting people with a story to tell epitomizes our deep-rooted desire to make a difference by helping organizations and individuals live and lead deliberately.

As our Sr. Partner, Global Leader Search and member of the Advisory Council, he has dived headfirst into “The Great Resignation” discussion by engaging with Associate Professor, Anthony Klotz and other thought leaders around the world, on topics such as the future of talent acquisition and employee retention.

As a practitioner, Ed sees the criticality of leadership and how a new dynamic leader can energize a division, transform a function and provide crucial strategic reorientation. He has led strategic searches across the Americas, Europe, and Africa--from the Board and C-Suite level to other critical roles deep within the organization. Ed is passionate about safeguarding the client’s brand throughout the search process and providing an exceptional candidate experience.

After many moves across the United States and a three-year assignment in the United Kingdom, Ed now calls Nashville, Tennessee home. He loves exploring the wilderness of Tennessee and is always aspiring to take his mountain biking skills to the next level. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=zUzM5EzK__0&feature=youtu.be

If you’re trying to be more confident, you may be going about it backward.

First, separate skill-confidence from self-confidence.

Skill-confidence is when you’ve proven you can do something and that experience helps you trust that you can successfully do it again. It usually shows up by saying we’re confident IN something, like a skill.

But, how do you feel confident when you haven’t proven to be good at it yet?

That’s where self-confidence comes in.

While skill-confidence is built through proven results, self-confidence starts in your mind. It’s when we believe in our ability to get the ability – to figure things out. Self-confidence says I may not have that skill today, but that doesn’t mean I can’t go get it tomorrow. Self-confidence says I’m willing to feel any emotion – like feeling doubt, fear, or rejection, and overcome any obstacles.

Most people wait to feel confident UNTIL they’ve proven the skill, but that’s backward. Instead, focus on developing your self-confidence – to believe you have the capability to develop your capacity, and will keep rising each time you fall until you create that external evidence.

When you’re feeling self-confident, you’ve either already created something amazing or are about to.

So excited for our latest partner to join Global Leader Group. He is extraordinary and will help companies grow and find their talent. Welcome Cassius!

Former White House Official, Cassius Butts '94 joins Global Leader Group as Senior Partner and Managing Director of Board Practice. In his role Butts will be acting as a mentor, helping the company grow while focusing on generational growth leadership programs and connecting underrepresented talent in their next role.

Global Leader Group is a global professional development and management consultancy firm dedicated to inspiring leaders to live and lead deliberately.

Butts' career included executive roles with leading financial institutions, and four presidential administrations, leading highly strategic efforts in the finance, strategy, housing, and small business sectors.

In 2011, he was appointed by U.S. President Barack Obama to serve as regional administrator for the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) where he managed five record-breaking years ($30 billion) for SBA lending within the eight southern states. Under the George W. Bush Administration, Butts served as a Presidential Management Fellow within the U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development (HUD) where he assisted in HUD's multimillion dollar marketing process.

A man who believes that the best conversations are those where we all learn from one another, Butts is a familiar voice to many entrepreneurs and aspiring leaders through his "talk to Cassius" podcast which launched earlier this year. www.talktoCassius.com.

Congratulations Alumnus Butts!
