Community Healthlink is winding down. Its Leominster behavioral health programs moved off Spruce Street in August, and Clinical & Support Options took over the Community Behavioral Health Center in September.

Here is the part that matters: when I checked last week, the state's own directory still listed the old address.

That is not a paperwork problem. Somebody in Leominster is going to decide, at eleven o'clock at night, that tomorrow is the day they ask for help. They will search. They will find an address. They will drive there. And if the building is empty, a lot of them will not try a second time.

Willingness is perishable. The window in which a person is ready to walk through a door is measured in hours, not weeks, and a stale listing can close it.

So we spent the month building an accurate one — every number, every address, for the ten towns we serve. The behavioral health centers. The peer recovery centers in Leominster, Fitchburg and Gardner. Health centers that will see you regardless of what you can pay. Family support. How to get naloxone. What to do when the barrier is a car rather than a decision.

We listed every organization doing this work here, not only our own.

If you work in recovery, healthcare, or ministry in north central Massachusetts: pull up your own referral list this week and check it. Mine was out of date too.

Our September newsletter is out.

It opens with four links — just four — that cover almost anyone looking for a recovery meeting. Celebrate Recovery. Narcotics Anonymous. AA. And the online directories that run around the clock, for the night when leaving the house isn’t possible.

We put them right in the letter instead of behind a click, because sometimes you need to forward something to someone at eleven at night, and one more click is one click too many.

There is no ask in this issue. Just what we published in August, an honest correction about where our staffing budget stands, and a map.

“I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go.” — Psalm 32:8

If you or someone you love is in crisis, call or text 988. If there is immediate danger, call 911.

You Don’t Have to Walk In Alone

“And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some.”
HEBREWS 10:24–25

The writer of Hebrews assumed people would drift. He said so plainly — “as is the habit of some” — and then named the remedy, which was not more willpower. It was a room with other people in it.

The hard part is that nobody tells you how to find the room.
There is no central directory of recovery meetings. There are thousands of independent groups scattered across a dozen websites that don’t talk to each other.

A person at the lowest point of their life gets handed a research project. If that has stopped you before, it isn’t a character flaw. It’s a directory problem.

We don’t host our own meeting right now. What we do is help you find one, and if it helps, sit in that first meeting with you so you’re not walking in by yourself. That costs nothing.

Discover how to find recovery meetings, understand different programs, and get support on your journey to healing and connection. Start your recovery today.

I Will Not Be Mastered by Anything

“All things are lawful for me,” but not all things are helpful. “All things are lawful for me,” but I will not be dominated by anything.
1 CORINTHIANS 6:12

Two people asked us about quitting smoking this month. Nobody ever asks about it in a crisis. It is the addiction that waits.

Christians tend to stall on the wrong question here: whether smoking is a sin. Scripture does not name it, the debate never ends, and while it stays arguable, nothing has to change.

Paul asks something better: not what is permitted, but who is in charge. That one is not arguable. If you have set a quit date and smoked anyway, you already know the answer.

Mark 12:30 tells us to love God with heart, soul, mind, and strength. Strength is the body: the lungs, the mornings, and the years you still have to give to the people in front of you.

Ci******es spend that fourth dimension a little at a time.

Three things worth knowing:

— Quitting smoking does not threaten your sobriety. NIDA research found that people who quit had 42% greater odds of staying in remission from their other substance use disorder.
— Willpower is not the method. Medication plus coaching more than doubles your chances.
— If you have failed before, you are normal. Most people quit for good only after several attempts.

A craving peaks and passes in a few minutes. You do not need to outlast it forever, only to have something to do with those minutes. “Pour out your heart before him” (Psalm 62:8) works fine in a parked truck at 6:40 in the morning.

Discover effective strategies to quit smoking through medication and coaching, addressing common misconceptions and providing practical steps for lasting change.

There is no line you cross.

Most people carrying this question are waiting for a moment that will settle it: a number of drinks, a lost job, or a particular morning. It doesn't exist. What matters isn't how much you use. It's what it's costing you and whether it keeps costing after you've decided it shouldn't.

Six questions worth sitting with for anyone who has been carrying this privately. You don't have to call yourself anything, and you don't have to be ready to quit.

"Search me, O God, and know my heart." — Psalm 139:23

You Are Allowed to Ask

The acronyms nobody explained: detox, CSS, TSS, IOP, in four plain sentences.

“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.”
JAMES 1:5

You are sitting in a hospital hallway, or at your own kitchen table, and someone hands you a list. ATS. CSS. TSS. IOP. PHP.

Residential. You nod as though you understand it. You do not understand it. Nobody explained it, and you were too tired and too frightened to ask a second time.

Here it is in plain words.

Detox is a few days of medical supervision while a substance leaves the body. In Massachusetts, it is called ATS. It keeps a person physically safe. It is not treatment — it is the doorway.

Residential is a live-in program, usually weeks rather than days. Massachusetts names those steps CSS, then TSS, then residential rehabilitation.

IOP is intensive outpatient — about 9 to 19 hours a week of counseling and group, while your loved one sleeps at home. Many programs meet in the evening so a person can keep a job.

Outpatient is an hour or two a week. It is not a lesser thing. For a great many people it is exactly the goal.

That is the whole map. It took four sentences — and no one gave them to you.

James says that God gives wisdom generously, and without reproach. Without making you feel foolish for needing it. If that is how heaven answers a question, it ought to be how the rest of us answer one.

You are not slow. You were handed a system built for clinicians and asked to read it on the worst day of your life.

So ask. Ask the nurse what level of care she is recommending and why. Ask what happens after discharge. Ask again if the first answer went past you. And if you would like someone to sit with you while you sort it out. That is what we are here for.

There is a moment in Mark’s Gospel that surprises people.

Jesus heals a man of leprosy, restores him to his family, his worship, and his whole life, and then tells him to keep it quiet. Say nothing to anyone (Mark 1:44).

Four chapters later, a different man is delivered from something that had cost him everything. He begs to get in the boat and follow, and Jesus tells him no, go home to your own people and tell them what God has done for you (Mark 5:19).

Two opposite instructions. One thread running through both: the story belonged to the man who lived it. When it was told, it came out of his own mouth. Jesus never turned around and used him as an example.

So you will not find a testimonial here. No photos. No first names. No “one of our clients recently…” Not with permission, not anonymized. We have stories. Every recovery ministry does, and they are some of the most beautiful things we have been allowed to witness. They are also not ours.

If you come to Mark Twelve, you are not going to turn into content. Your worst year is not our marketing. And if the day comes when you want to tell it, from a pulpit, in a meeting, or across your own kitchen table, that is your right and your joy, and we will be in the front row.

What we will tell you: How many people we walked with. What the scholarships pay for. Where every dollar goes. Who sits on the board and what they decided. You can measure a ministry by those things.

You should never have to measure one by somebody else’s worst year.

Explore why Mark Twelve Recovery Foundation prioritizes client confidentiality over storytelling, ensuring recovery journeys remain personal and respected.

"Surely the LORD is in this place, and I did not know it." — Genesis 28:16

Jacob wasn't in a church when he said that. He was asleep in open country with a rock for a pillow, not a holy place, just the spot where he ran out of daylight. And when he woke up, he took the stone that had been under his head all night and stood it up as an altar. 🙏

He didn't travel to the altar. The altar was already underneath him.

If you have ever prayed at a kitchen table at three in the morning, with the phone face-up in case it rings, hear this. That table is not a lesser sanctuary. It is not where you prayed because you couldn't get to church. Something holy happened in that room, and like Jacob, you may not have known it at the time.

So many people tell us the same thing: "All I can do is pray." But look at Mark 2. Four friends carried a man to Jesus, and when the crowd blocked the door, they climbed up and dug through the roof to lower him in. Scripture says Jesus saw THEIR faith — the friends'. Their faith wasn't a feeling. It was a stretcher, a ladder, and a hole in somebody's roof. ✝️

They prayed with their hands. You can too. Learn who to call before you need to call them. Keep one trusted, faith-aligned number in your phone. And find your own support — the person you love cannot be your only source of news about how you're doing.

If you're the one still showing up, still setting the table, still awake, still asking, you are not doing the small version of this work. You're doing the part almost nobody sees. And He sees it. ❤️

"Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path." — Psalm 119:105

Read that verse again and notice how small the promise is. Not a searchlight over the whole road ahead. A lamp at your feet. Enough light for the next step.

If you've ever loved someone in addiction or lived it yourself, you already know why that's a mercy. The whole road is unbearable to look at. The next step is survivable.

Mark Twelve offers six Bible studies, free to anyone who wants them, on loving God with your whole self, on quieting a shaming inner voice, on making amends, on grief, on honest prayer, and one written just for those who served.
