Interesting Article in the NY Times on shopping for 2nd Hand Furniture.

We gave two of our home-decor writers $1,500 each to buy a couch, a rug, and a lamp secondhand. Here’s how they did it.

I have been fielding calls & emails today asking if this email is real, it is!

If you got it you need to complete and choose your payment method. It won't make you rich but it might buy lunch, dinner, or a weekend away depending on your credit card volume. Didn't get a email don't worry these are coming in waves.

Side note this likely does create a income event for you and may be taxable but still take the money before their lawyers do.

Cheetahs have a reputation of being the fastest animal, (yes, they’re fast!)— but they can only keep up that pace for a short burst, they can’t consistently stay at that speed.

A camel can keep a consistent speed for hours, if not days. This goes back to the story of the tortoise and the hare.

Who can cover more ground? Get more done over a time span??? Yup, the camel 🐪.

Getting a new idea, jumping in with both feet and going with the attitude that you’ll figure it out along the way, is not a plan.

Consistency, repetition, and becoming a master of your skills, services and customer experience will take your store so much further!

Who’s a Cheetah 🐆? Who’s a Camel 🐪?

We’re about to start the real Holiday Rush! Pink Friday, Black Friday , Small Business Saturday, Secondhand Sunday, Cyber Monday and then the December blur!

What can you do to stand out, attract customers, and compete with the big boxes??

DON’T… compare your store to the big boxes, they don’t have your heart.
DON’T… try to compete with only low prices, you have items they will never have.
DON’T… be afraid to highlight your offerings, customers are looking for unique and want to support their local, small businesses.
DON’T… try to copy their hours, discounts or give aways, that’s not what loyal customers want.

What else can you do, besides lowering your prices?
* Host a theme party— holiday pj shopping party (open at night, serve hot chocolate and cookies and encourage everyone to wear their best holiday pjs)= very low cost!
* Offer a gift wrap station— folding table with gift wrap, scissors, tape and bows— customers leave with gifts ready for under the tree. (Or partner with a local charity for them to wrap for a donation)
* Offer a hot cocoa bar to all customers and their buddies ( can you add whiskey to the husband’s cocoa to help the shopping process?)
* Offer a wish list customers can complete to help their people get them what they really want! (Don’t forget add your store gift cards to the wish lists)

Think beyond a discount, you don’t want to give away your prime profit opportunities!

Share your best holiday events and offers we can learn from!

Our friends at the National Retail Federation are reporting that law enforcement agencies are reporting a surge in phone scams targeting the retail industry and yes we know stores that have been targeted in the past.

These scams often involve phishing or social engineering tactics, where bad actors contact store or corporate personnel via phone or email to extract sensitive information. This information is then used to carry out fraudulent activities at retail locations. Scammers frequently impersonate individuals such as company executives, IT or customer support staff, law enforcement officers, or utility company representatives. Common schemes include calling retail stores and posing as someone in authority, instructing employees to withdraw money from the register and purchase gift cards. The gift card details are then provided to the scammer over the phone.

Another emerging scam involves impersonating IT personnel. In this scenario, the scammer instructs employees to process a "test transaction" using a barcode they provide. While the transaction appears legitimate, the barcode actually initiates a refund to an account controlled by the scammer.

If your store is victimized by these or similar fraud schemes, retailers should report the details regarding the incident to the FBI’s Internet Crimes Complaint Center.

Why the internet feels broken today…

A bunch of websites are down because Amazon Web Services (AWS) is having problems.

AWS is basically the behind-the-scenes power plant for much of the internet. Instead of running their own servers, most companies rent space on Amazon’s. When AWS glitches, it’s like the power goes out for half the web.

That’s why sites like Canva, Snapchat, Fortnite, and even McDonald’s apps aren’t working right now.

So if your favorite site won’t load, it’s probably not them, it’s AWS. Give it a bit. I haven’t seen any updates yet, but just wanted to give you a heads up on this Monday morning.
