📣 AUCTION SPOTLIGHT: A Rare Piece of American History You Weren't Supposed to See! 🇺🇸✨

Coming soon to our upcoming online auction event, the Rustic Americana & Primitive Collection in Canvas, West Virginia!📍

Take a close look at this stunning, antique American flag. Notice anything unusual? It features exactly 39 stars.

Here is the fascinating story behind it: The United States never officially had a 39-star flag.

In 1889, flag manufacturers confidently predicted that the massive Dakota Territory would enter the Union as a single 39th state. They rushed to print thousands of these flags to sell to the public. But on November 2, 1889, Congress surprised everyone by admitting both North and South Dakota at the exact same time as the 39th and 40th states.

Instantly, all 39-star flags became obsolete, unofficial, and technically incorrect!

Why this specific piece is an absolute treasure:

⭐ Luxury Material: While common street-waving flags of the era were made of cheap cotton, this premium banner is crafted from delicate, woven historical silk with a beautiful natural sheen.
⭐ Ceremonial Fringe: It features its original, ornate gold textile fringe, indicating it was likely used for a formal indoor political podium, a government office, or a civil war veterans' reunion.
⭐ Excellent Display Size: Measuring 35” x 23”, it is the perfect centerpiece size for museum-grade conservation framing.

This is a rare opportunity for vexillologists, folk art lovers, and Americana collectors to own a true historical anomaly.

📸 QUALITY PHOTOGRAPHY MATTERS — AND WE’VE UPPED OUR GAME.

When buyers are bidding online, a photograph may be the closest they ever get to an item before deciding what it’s worth to them.

That’s why we believe quality photography is such an important part of representing an estate — and lately, we’ve been working to take ours to the next level.

These are a few examples from our upcoming McGinnis Family Estate Auction (Bruce & Paula McGinnis) in Lewisburg, WV. Each item is photographed with the goal of presenting it clearly, professionally, and as accurately as possible — while still showing the wear, imperfections, and character that are part of its story.

We don’t believe in hiding damage or making an item appear to be something it isn’t. We simply believe that the belongings entrusted to us deserve to be presented at their very best.

Good photography helps buyers see details.
Good photography creates confidence.
Good photography gets attention.
And in a competitive online marketplace, attention creates bidders.

From a piece worth $20 to one worth $20,000, our approach is the same: present it professionally and give it the best opportunity to reach the right buyer.

Here’s a little sneak peek at what’s coming in the McGinnis Family Estate Auction — and a look at the new standard of photography we’re bringing to NGW Auctions.
