🌧️ RAIN FROM HURRICANE ISAIAS REMNANTS REACHES CENTRAL KENTUCKY — IS YOUR HOME PREPARED?
As remnants of Hurricane Isaias move through Kentucky following the storm's Gulf Coast landfall, Lexington and surrounding Central Kentucky communities are experiencing rainfall associated with the system.
While we're not experiencing hurricane-strength conditions here, rainfall can still reveal existing roof leaks, drainage problems, and vulnerabilities around foundations.
At ServiceMaster Fire & Water Restoration Services, we want to help our Central Kentucky neighbors recognize potential water damage risks before they become bigger problems.
🏡 **DID YOU KNOW? OUR LOCAL GEOLOGY CAN PLAY A ROLE IN BASEMENT WATER PROBLEMS.**
Much of the Lexington area sits on limestone bedrock, with clay-rich soils in some locations. When prolonged or heavy rainfall saturates the ground around a foundation, water pressure can build against basement walls and floors.
This is called **hydrostatic pressure**, and it can contribute to water seeping through foundation cracks, joints, and other vulnerable areas.
Not every property is affected the same way, but understanding these conditions can help you recognize potential water problems early.
💧 **6 IMPORTANT THINGS TO CHECK DURING AND AFTER THE RAIN:**
🏠 **Roofs & Ceilings:** Watch for new water stains, dripping, or bubbling paint that may indicate a roof leak.
💧 **Basements & Crawl Spaces:** Check for standing water, damp foundation walls, moisture along floor edges, or unfamiliar musty odors.
🔧 **Sump Pumps:** Make sure your sump pump is functioning properly and that its discharge line directs water away from your foundation. If you have a battery backup, check that it's ready in case of a power outage. Follow the manufacturer's instructions when testing your pump, and never handle electrical equipment while standing in water.
🍂 **Gutters & Drainage:** Once conditions are safe, check for clogged gutters, overflowing downspouts, and water pooling near your foundation.
🚪 **Windows & Doors:** Inspect surrounding walls, flooring, and trim for signs of water intrusion.
⚠️ **Drywall & Flooring:** Watch for damp carpet, soft drywall, or wet baseboards. Moisture can remain hidden beneath flooring and inside walls even after surfaces appear dry.
🚨 **WHAT IF YOU DISCOVER WATER INSIDE?**
Safety comes first. Stay away from standing water near electrical hazards, photograph visible damage, and take reasonable steps to prevent additional damage when safe.
Identifying unwanted moisture early and addressing the source promptly can help limit further property damage and reduce the risk of microbial growth.
