Lexington Fire Department crews begin testing fire hydrants in in the area shown in the map tomorrow, Monday, Aug 24, running through Friday.

If you're in the area, you may see discolored water or lower pressure for a short time while crews work nearby. It's normal. Sediment in the water mains gets stirred up when hydrants flow, and crews flush it clear before moving on.

Quick tips: run a cold tap until it clears, hold off on laundry until it
does, and don't dry stained clothes — rewash right away.

HYDRANT TESTING NEXT WEEK - 8/24 through 8/28.

Starting Monday, Aug 24, Lexington Fire Department crews will be testing fire hydrants in the area shown in the map through Friday, Aug 28.

Each year, crews test a selection of hydrants across the city, measuring water flow and pressure to confirm they'll deliver what firefighters need in an emergency. Testing rotates through Lexington so every hydrant is checked at least once every five years.

What to expect if you're in the area next week:

You may notice discolored water — rust, tea, or brown colored — or a short-term drop in water pressure while crews are nearby. It's normal. Sediment settles in the water mains over time and gets stirred up when hydrants flow. Crews flush the line clear before leaving, so it's usually brief.

If your water looks discolored:

• Run a cold water tap for a few minutes until it clears.
• Wait on laundry until it does. Check a sample in a clear glass first.
• If clothes get stained, don't dry them. Rewash right away.
• Low pressure after crews leave? Clean your faucet screens.

If it hasn't cleared by the next morning, call Lexington Utilities Customer Service at (336) 243-2489 (weekdays, 9 a.m.–4 p.m.).

Lexington Fire Department crews are testing fire hydrants this week, through Friday, Aug 14. The area being tested is in the graphic above. It's part of a program that runs every year.

Sediment settles in the water mains over time, and testing stirs it up. Our crews flush the line until it runs clear before moving on, so any discoloration is usually brief.

If your water looks discolored:

Congratulations to Sergeant Nathan Spicer who was awarded an $8,000 scholarship from the North Carolina State Firefighters’ Association (NCSFA) for outstanding academic achievement, character development, and leadership ability!

The NCSFA scholarship program began in 1972, awards $240k+ in scholarships to NC firefighters and graduating seniors of NC firefighters annually, and received 187 scholarship applications this year.

We are proud to recognize a true Fire Safety Hero! 🔥👏

The Fire Marshal’s Office recently presented an award to Da’Nyla Archie at Charles England Elementary School for following our fire safety rules.

Da’Nyla found a lighter on the playground and made the safe choice—she did NOT touch it. Instead, she immediately notified a teacher so it could be safely secured.

This is a perfect example of how fire safety education makes a real difference. Because of her quick thinking and smart decision, a potentially dangerous situation was handled safely.

Great job, Da’Nyla! We are incredibly proud of you for helping keep your school and classmates safe. 💙🚒
