As a loving tribute to a beautiful, young feline lost as a result of the reckless conduct of a veterinarian, Nebula’s Foundation was formed.
Nebula’s family came to Joey’s Legacy seeking assistance in the pursuit of justice for Nebula. Our veterinary team was able to conduct a full review of medical records and compose an opinion letter that was part of legal action taken by the family.

The family decided to make a significant monetary contribution to Nebula’s Foundation. The mission of the Foundation is to provide financial assistance for the human victims of substandard veterinary care so that they may pursue justice. Victims may apply online at the link below and must meet certain financial criteria in order to qualify for a grant up to $400.00 from Nebula’s Foundation.

Please share our posts with everyone , as well as encourage donations so we can help keep the Foundation liquid. A donation link has been provided below. Donors may specify that they would like their donation to go to Nebula’s Foundation.

The mission of this group IS NOT to vilify the veterinary profession. The vast majority of its members are caring, compassionate individuals that entered the profession because of a profound love for companion animals.

The mission of this group IS NOT to vilify ethical professionals that practice medicine with the highest of standards who, on a rare occasion, commit an act of negligence and have enough integrity to confront the family and demonstrate sincere remorse and contrition and do anything and everything to make the aftermath as bearable as possible.

The mission of this group IS to vilify those veterinarians who refuse to accept responsibility for their actions, whose actions change lives forever, who refuse to confront the family by ignoring their emails and phone calls, who try to blame family members for the loss of the companion animal and whose scandalous actions degrade the reputation of the veterinary profession as a whole.

This is what we are all about:

1. We are not attorneys
2. We are not veterinarians
3. We assist people who have had bad experiences with their veterinarians, specifically either lost a pet or their pet sustained a permanent injury.
4. We recognize that the vast majority of American veterinarians are caring, compassionate professionals that entered the profession because of a profound love for animals.
5. We recognize that, because of that, the majority of pet parents will never have a tragic experience with a veterinarian.
6. We recognize that veterinarians, like everyone else in this world, are humans that may, on a rare occasion, commit an act of negligence. This subset of the entire profession contains ethical professionals that have enough integrity to admit when things went wrong, take responsibility and do their best to comfort the bereaved pet parent in the aftermath. We laud these veterinarians, who understand that truth and transparency goes a long way. These are also the veterinarians that, because of their honorable conduct, will likely never be sued.
7. An even smaller subset of the entire profession is unprincipled, unethical and amoral. They refuse to accept responsibility when things go wrong, even when faced with compelling proof. They don't have the good character to confront the grieving family so they have their staff do their dirty work. They ignore the family's phone calls and emails, and refuse to offer any refund of vet costs. These are the veterinarians that we receive calls about, in almost 100% of the cases. Pet parents tell us that if they were treated with dignity and respect, they would not consider taking legal action. These reprobate vets are their own worst enemies. Their best chance of avoiding legal action is to come forward and take accountability.
8. If you think animal law attorneys are "ambulance chasers", you clearly demonstrate how uninformed you are. Very few attorneys are interested in suing veterinarians because, as you know, animals are considered property in almost all states.

Numbers don't lie. These are Gallup Polls taken in 2006 and 2018. People were asked what the most admired and respected professions are. What happened to cause the drop in the integrity of the veterinary profession? If you're a veterinarian, you're probably in the majority of veterinarians who provide care and compassion for your patients, and uphold the highest standards of ethics. It's understandable why you seriously doubt the existence of veterinary substandard care: the world you live in doesn't include it.

Unfortunately, it exists. My dog was a victim of negligence. So says the Florida Board of Veterinary Medicine, made up of five veterinarians and two consumer advocates. So say two independent veterinarians who reviewed his records and determined the same as the Board. If you are one of the majority, and have never committed substandard practice, be very grateful but be humble enough to admit that some of your colleagues were not as proficient as you are, and that in every profession some members do drop the ball now and then.

If you'd like to see some redacted examples of the letters our vet team writes, visit https://www.joeyslegacy.org/case-review-samples/

Don't be naive and think that all pet owners that complain about the death of their companion animal are simply a bunch of whining complainers and looking for someone to blame. Sometimes, it's the veterinarian and many times it's not.
