Since I get asked about this all the time out in the field, I figured I'd break down the quick difference between what you're seeing in your house:

1. The little ones (German roaches):
These guys are about a half-inch long and prefer to live indoors. They love hanging out near food and moisture (kitchens and bathrooms are their favorite spots) and they reproduce fast if you don't jump on them.

2. The big ones (American & Smoky Brown roaches):
These are what folks usually call palmetto bugs. They're the big 1- to 2-inch roaches that actually live outside in pine straw, mulch, and trees. Most of the time, they just wander into the house by mistake looking for water or cooler air.
