Government oversight of disaster relief funds [including COVID-19] keeps me awake at night. Here is my most recent story published in Southerly Magazine. According to a government report, North Carolina spent only 1% of federal relief money [for Hurricane Matthew in 2016] by December 2018 because of “limited institutional knowledge within state government” for how to distribute community grants and design recovery programs. The report also revealed the state emergency management agency spent $3.7 million unnecessarily.

Robeson County is still picking up the pieces from two hurricanes. Now the local government and nonprofits are preparing for potential storms during the pandemic.
