Eleven hours a week on admin. Just over half that on actually growing the business.

That's from a new American Express small-business survey. Run across the pond, but the math lands the same on Main Street. Quotes, invoices, callbacks, scheduling. The work that keeps the lights on crowds out the work that grows the place.

The line that stuck with us: 36% said their own lack of capacity was the biggest barrier to growth. Not the economy. Not demand. Hours.

Most of those hours are the same few tasks on repeat. And repeat is the part a machine can carry. Calls answered after close. Jobs booked while you're up on a roof. Records that update themselves.

July in Ohio is when the AC calls come in.

And here's the math on the one that goes to voicemail at 6:40 on a Saturday.

It isn't a lost service call. It's a lost customer. The one who would've called you again in the fall for the furnace, and again next summer, and who would've given your name to their sister when her unit went out.

One missed ring, one afternoon, and the whole chain goes to whoever picked up instead.

That's the part that doesn't show up anywhere. Not on a P&L, not in a report. It's just quietly not there.

A phone that gets answered is the cheapest thing in the business. It just never felt urgent until you priced out what one Saturday call was really worth.

Forbes ran a piece last week with a point worth sitting with: getting hours back isn't the win. What you do with those hours is.

For a lot of shops around Lima, recovered time quietly refills with whatever was next in the pile — more paperwork, more callbacks, more chasing. The article makes the case for spending it on purpose instead: better equipment, more time in front of customers, the second service line you've been putting off since spring.

People assume building a phone agent starts with the technology. It doesn't. It starts with listening to how the owner already answers the phone.

New restaurant coming to Lima — Layne's is opening its first northwest Ohio spot here. Good news for the town.

Here's the thing nobody warns a new place about: opening week, the phone becomes its own full-time job. Are you open yet. Do you do catering. What time do you close. Can I get a big order for Saturday.

Every one of those is a real customer. And every one of them comes in while the dining room is packed and there is nobody free to pick up.

That's what small business owners told American Express they spend on admin and finance paperwork in a new survey of 1,000 owners (UK data, published last month). It's nearly double the time they spend on sales and actually growing the business.

More than half said paperwork gets in the way of running the place. Over a third said their own lack of capacity — not demand, not the economy — is the single biggest thing holding growth back. One in five are working 60+ hours a week.

You don't need a survey to recognize that here. Quotes get written after dinner. Voicemails get returned Sunday afternoon. Invoices sit until they can't sit any longer.

Those eleven hours aren't overhead. They're the follow-ups that never got made, the second truck that never got priced out, the Saturday that never happened.

Ohio has been on CNBC's Top States for Business list since 2007. This year it finally hit No. 1 — up from No. 5 last year.

A big part of how we got here is boring in the best way: you can register a business in Ohio for around $99 and have it processed in about a business day. More than 107,000 new Ohio businesses filed in the first half of this year alone.

Here's the part that stuck with us, though. The state made starting fast. Nobody made the rest of it fast — the calls you miss on a job site, the quote you write at 9 p.m., the follow-ups stacking up by Friday.

That's the work we do: getting those hours back to the owner who earned them.

That's what small-business owners in American Express's new SME Business Barometer said they spend on admin and finance paperwork — about six working days a month. Time spent on sales and growing the business? Just over half that.

More than half said the paperwork gets in the way of actually running the place. A third named their own lack of capacity as the biggest thing holding growth back. One in five is working 60+ hours a week.

It's a UK survey, but the math looks awfully familiar on Main Street in Lima. And the hours almost never disappear into the interesting work — they go to the after-hours call that landed in voicemail, the quote retyped into three different places, the invoice chased twice.

That's narrow, repeatable work. It's exactly what a system can carry, so the six days go back where they belong: to the person running the business.

A new NFIB report covered by the Statehouse News Bureau this month found Ohio small businesses still can't find enough workers to fill the jobs they have. Small businesses are more than 99% of the businesses in this state and employ about 44% of the private workforce — so "we're short-handed" isn't a niche problem around here, it's most of Main Street.

Here's the part nobody puts in a report: when you're short a person, the phone is usually the first thing to go. You're on a roof in Elida, under a sink in Bluffton, ringing up a customer downtown. The phone rings anyway.

An AI phone agent is just a helper that picks up when nobody can. It answers in your business's voice, tells the caller what they asked, takes the name and number, and books the appointment if you want it to. Text-back is the simpler cousin: the call doesn't get answered, so the caller instantly gets a text from your number — "Sorry we missed you, what do you need?" — and the conversation keeps going instead of ending.

It doesn't replace the hire you're trying to make. It just means the work you already earned doesn't walk out the door while you're doing the work.

The study says Ohio doesn't have enough qualified workers to meet the needs of small businesses.
