YES FM is a radio station based in Toledo, Ohio, that has a large listener base in the Lima region. They were one of our first coworking members, and gave us the impetus to invest in developing private office spaces. I am excited to introduce you to Randall Hattery in this member profile blog!
Tell us about your work
I am the Lima Site Manager as well as the Programming Assistant for YES FM. We are a non-profit contemporary Christian radio station. YES FM is dedicated to evangelizing and discipling young people and families. Serving Northwest and West-Central Ohio, Southeast Michigan, and West-Central Indiana, as well as a global audience through our apps. We strive to be a positive influence. In a culture full of pressure, we point listeners toward the hope found in Jesus Christ, believing that as we lift Him up, He draws all people to Himself. I assist the station manager, Jeff Howe, in producing on air spots, loading new music into our system, and really anything that will aid in a better day for everyone! As the Lima Site Manager, I am the local liaison to the greater Lima area. By maintaining a presence at the Lima studio, I can meet with people from the community without them needing to travel to our home studio in Toledo.
How did you get started?
Like most of the staff at YES FM, I began as a listener. The radio station I had been listening to didn't play my favorite artist that much, and when talking with a coworker at the job I had at the time, he told me that YES FM played my favorite frequently. Not only did they play my favorite artist frequently, all the music was really good. I loved the positivity and God focus of the channel. I signed up to be a volunteer, helping out at events. Then they asked volunteers if any wanted to try and be on air. I jumped at the chance. Eventually I was offered a PT DJ position, and later, the position I hold now.
What is your favorite coffee/tea/cocoa/other drink?
You'll generally catch me drinking a Sprite or flavored water.
When you were a kid, what did you want to be "when you grew up"?
When I was younger, I always wanted to do something with music, though back then I wanted to make music. LOL As a young adult, I had some friends who had some good music equipment, and I tried to write songs, but I never finished many. As I got older, married with kids, I moved on from music, focusing on my family. I'm grateful that God had a plan for me that involved music after all! And I love every day of it!
What else would you like to share?
Oftentimes, people hear "Christian music" and their minds go to Hymns on Sunday mornings. There is nothing wrong at all with Hymns, but many people, especially today's youth, find it difficult to relate to those. Our mission is to reach those youth and their families. We do this by placing music in the genres today's world is listening to. Rap, hip-hop, rock, and pop. But unlike the music you'll hear on your average radio station, the music we play at YES FM is positive, full of hope and love, with our eyes focused on God. We are a station the entire family can agree on, be it on a road trip or just hanging out together. And being non-profit, we don't have to answer to advertisers. We listen to God first and foremost, and then our listeners, as we love interacting with everyone!
