It's spring and farmers in Aroostook are getting ready for the planting season. Since the 1800s, Aroostook County in Northern Maine has been the agricultural basket of the state, with a long history of forestry and farm-to table-crops.

Aroostook County is the NUMBER 1 producer in the state for:
- Grains, oilseeds, drybeans, drypeas🌾
- Vegetables, melons, potatoes, sweetpotatoes 🥔🍉🥦🌽
- Cultivated Christmas trees and short rotation woodycrops🌲
- Cattle and calves🐄

The closure of Loring Air Force Base in 1994 was a significant blow to Aroostook County’s economy and job market, leaving questions about the base's future use. Fortunately, shortly after the closure, the Defense Finance and Accounting Service (DFAS) announced it would establish a work center in the former Loring AFB hospital. DFAS continues to serve as a major anchor tenant, employing hundreds of people, bringing stability, skilled talent, and long-term investment to the region.

Monument to Loring's military dogs -
"With more than a dozen volunteers gathered around him, geologist Chenzung Wang wheeled a cart across a small patch of grass on the outskirts of the former Loring Air Force Base.

“Take a look,” he said, pointing to a blip on the cart’s computer screen. A white parabola appeared in sharp contrast to the soil around it. Picked up by ground-penetrating radar, the anomaly, as Wang referred to it, indicates that, 5 or 6 feet underground, are the remains of a sentry dog that once patrolled the base."

The installation will include a life-size bronze German Shepherd and a pathway of bricks with names of the dogs and their handlers.
