One of my favorite parts of being a forester is discovering the history of the land. I found this on a property I’m working on in Porter. I contacted the historical society and they sent me the map and drawing of the old school house “5th district schoolhouse”. I initially thought it was on my clients property, but it turned out to be just over the line on the Moses Chapman Road. I found the old “skull rock” that was next to the old school house back in the 1800’s. The picture below is something I put together for the client’s forest plan. A great way to get interested in your woods is to learn its history!
