Dear Cellardoor Friends,
As Spring, Maine's version of it, has finally arrived, shaking off the burdens of Winter and bringing in freshness and vitality, be it in the blooms on my favorite lilac bush by the barn door, the greenery on the apple trees' canopy, or the broad palette transformation of the vineyard view, I share with you that Cellardoor too is having a Spring season. New dreams, new visions, and new energy are coming here.
Many of you have heard me say that it was a confluence of events that brought me to Maine to own Cellardoor Winery so many years ago. I am so thankful that I didn't resist the irrational jump entailed with choosing this path along life's journey. Caring for this property, truly feeling the responsibility for each person who has been a part of the Cellardoor team, and hosting guests with the goal of giving them a highlight to take home has made me better. When I bought the property, the prior owner said, "You are a caretaker for a community farm." I promise I never lost sight of that charge.
Over the past several months, a confluence of events, many gut-wrenching and others simply forcing reflection, has led me to step aside now so two eager, next-generation people can assume the mantle of caretaking for this beautiful place. Matt and Evalina Haskell have purchased the Farmhouse and Vineyard property, to be called Cellardoor Farm. Matt sees what this property can be in its next phase - it speaks to him, as it has spoken to me.
This property, many people's happy place and a safe and welcoming haven for our hobo, the migrant worker of the depression era, is meant to be shared and experienced. I am honored to have shared and experienced so many memorable moments with you over the years. Thank you! And now, I wish you and the Haskells a joyous future on your property.
Hugs, Bettina
PS. I can't possibly say goodbye without recognizing the incredible people who have been a part of the Cellardoor team during the past nineteen years. It wasn't me, it was us!
