Fall is here, homeowners should be considering ways to protect their concrete from harmful ice melt products from their concrete driveways, sidewalks and patios. Also consider how to protect them in the future.
Concrete is the most used product in construction in the world. Although it is used for its excellent life span it is not indestructible. With rising cost in construction, it only makes sense to get the most life out of your concrete. With a little care and maintenance, you can get better life from your concrete and reduce the risk of failures.
Even if you use deicers products labeled “safe” for concrete, the products used by state, county and city road crews are corrosive to concrete. As a rule of thumb if it melts ice and snow chemically it is not good for your concrete.
After any snow or winter storm, you rinse your vehicles of these harmful chemicals to prevent rust. Driveways and concrete surfaces need to be rinsed of these also. The moisture containing these products is absorbed by your concrete and this creates the flaking and pitting of your concrete.
With spring approaching we can help you with a plan to protect your concrete from these harmful chemicals. For as little as 30 cents per square foot your concrete will be protected from these harmful chemicals.

Apply SaltGuard products with a pump-up sprayer. SaltGuard products are a water repellent and chloride screen for concrete. Non film forming will not make your concrete surface slippery, the product penetrates the concrete.

Fall is the time to prepare your lawn for next year. Farmers plant their wheat during the fall in September, so we should plant our grass.

Lawn Aerator
A lawn aerator perforates compacted soil to allow air, water, and nutrients to reach grass roots.
-Core (Plug) Aerators: Remove small soil plugs from the ground, making them the most effective choice for relieving heavy soil compaction
-Best Practices
Depth: Aim for 2 to 3 inches of soil pe*******on for optimal root relief.
Timing: Aerate during the active growing season—early fall or spring for cool-season grasses, and late spring for warm-season grasses.
Preparation: Water the lawn thoroughly the day before aerating and mow the grass down to 1–2 inches to make core extraction easier.

Slicer/Over Seeder
Overseeding is the process of spreading new grass seed directly over an existing lawn to repair bare patches and improve turf density without tearing up the soil.
Preparation and Steps
• Mow low: Cut your existing grass shorter than normal and bag the clippings to improve seed-to-soil contact.
• Aerate or dethatch: Use core aeration or a power dethatcher to break through surface debris and allow seeds to reach loose soil.
The Over Seeder is 22” wide with an exclusive 11-blade slicing reel that floats along contours of yards increasing seed to soil contact and improving germination rates.
• Spread seed: Apply the recommended amount of matching grass seed evenly using a drop or broadcast spreader.
• Fertilize and cover: Apply a starter fertilizer and a light topdressing like peat moss or compost to retain moisture.
• Water consistently: Keep the seed bed moist with frequent, light watering multiple times a day until germination occurs.
Best Time to Overseed
• Cool-season grasses: Early fall (September) is optimal due to warm soil and cool air temperatures. Early spring is a secondary option.
• Warm-season grasses: Late Spring as active growth begins.

Tree Trimming Time!!!!
The best time to trim trees in Kansas is during the dormant season, specifically from late winter to early spring (February through April), before new buds break. This timing minimizes stress, reduces disease spread (such as oak wilt), and allows for faster healing.
Key considerations for tree trimming in Kansas:
• Best Window: Late February through early April is ideal because the wounds seal quickly as the tree enters its rapid growth phase.
• Fruit Trees: Prune in late winter to early spring, ensuring the wood is not frozen.
• Exceptions: Dead, broken, or diseased branches can be removed anytime.
• Avoid: Late summer or early fall is generally not ideal, as it can stimulate new growth that won't have time to harden before winter.
