Dorkings were one of the first breeds brought by the colonists to Americaas a food source. We have some White Dorking chicks available for farm pickup. They are dual purpose and have been great layers for us. The hens lay better in the winter than most breeds. Message for more info.

Today’s breed spotlight is the Nankin. Another endangered poultry breed brought to America by the early colonists. This breed is very broody and was used to hatch game birds such as quail and pheasant. The Nankin is a bantam and there is no large fowl equivalent. Nankins are calm and friendly making them an excellent pet for children. Nankins can be found as one of the flocks at Colonial Williamsburg today. Let us know if we can help you start a flock.

This week we will be highlighting our chicken breeds. Today’s chicken spotlight is The Dorking. The Dorking is one of the oldest British chicken breeds. It is thought the Dorking may have been brought to Europe by the Romans when they invaded Britain in 43 AD. The Dorking is a dual purpose bird for meat and eggs. The Dorking was brought to America by the early settlers as a food source. Dorkings come in several colors and are known for their fifth toe. The Livestock Conservancy lists the Dorking as an Threatened heritage breed of poultry. The breed lost popularity when the poultry industrial complex began. We have the White Dorking and will be offering hatching eggs and chicks this year. Contact us for more information.
