“It’s really impressive to see what’s happening here,” said Shaheen, D-New Hampshire. What’s happening includes a new biomass boiler. It uses the wood waste to heat the plant and the kilns that make sure the wood is free from imperfections. “You can save money at the same time you are doing something that is good for the environment and that is part of what they are doing here,” Shaheen said.

A furniture maker in New Hampshire is getting a new heating system, thanks in part to federal grants. Sen. Jeanne Shaheen got a firsthand look at the operation.

Thanks to Dartmouth College for this great video profiling our innovative partnership whilst contributing to the circular economy. They harvested wood from their own land that we fashioned into furniture and installed in their residence halls.

Dartmouth manages about 27,000 acres of forestland in the Second College Grant in northern New Hampshire, along with timberland in other parcels, such as Mount Moosilauke. Kevin Evans, director of woodland operations for the Woodlands Office, talks about making hard maple furniture from some of the timber, and managing the land with carbon sequestration and sustainability in mind.

Delighted to be featured in The Northern Logger and Timber Processor and the Northern Forest Center highlighting our work with Dartmouth College.
"At DCI’s sawmill in Vermont, about 60 miles south of the Lisbon, NH plant, 10,000 board feet of ash, red oak, hard and soft maple, or yellow birch is sawn daily using a double-cut band headsaw, with no resaw. This volume happens to be about the same amount used daily at their Lisbon manufacturing facility. After being sawn at the South Royalton, VT mill, lumber is shipped to Lisbon for drying and processing. Kiln time for maple is about two weeks. Logs are often delivered to Lisbon and then backhauled to the sawmill on the returning lumber truck. One of the reasons Dartmouth contracts with DCI for their dorm projects is because of the company’s local setting. Minimizing the movement of logs and lumber and staying within a core area of the college is important for Dartmouth’s sustainability mindset. With the start of Dartmouth’s fall term coming fast, by mid-August DCI’s plant was working hard to meet their deadline to have the furniture built and installed before move-in day..."

Our installation teams work hard. We install furniture at military bases and universities all over the world. Last year alone our team completed 124 installations in 23 states and two countries. That's one installation every three days totaling 500 full size container truckloads of furniture. Here, one of our lead installers tells the story of a recent installation at UCLA.

Indoor air quality directly impacts student👩‍🎓cognition. The science on that is clear. For years, DCI has made this issue a priority, ensuring that our furniture does not contribute in any way to poor indoor air quality. Why is this important? Because furniture frequently contributes to poor indoor air quality by off-gassing harmful chemicals called VOCs (volatile organic compounds). This is why DCI recently sought and was awarded the SCS Indoor Advantage Gold third party certification.

DCI has earned SCS Indoor Advantage Gold, the highest level of indoor air quality performance for furniture.

Like many contract furniture manufacturers, DCI is feeling the impact of lumber shortages because of global supply chain disruption. For contract furniture manufacturers like us, plywood is a key issue. Baltic birch plywood from Russia, a mainstay for case goods, is no longer available because of the war in Ukraine. But even before the war, tariffs on Chinese imports put huge demand on local plywood supplies. When that demand intersected with the housing boom, domestic suppliers were overwhelmed. At DCI, we had to adapt to the growing plywood paucity. To replace the plywood, we create a solution using reclaimed hardwood from our own factory. Fortunately, we have total control over that raw material because we harvest it within 100 miles of our sawmill and factory.

Where do people go when they can’t afford furniture? In Chicago, there’s a remarkable organization called the Chicago Furniture Bank (CFB). And it helps individuals and families who are transitioning out of homeless. In their own words, “CFB breaks the cycle of furniture poverty by transforming an empty house into a home” through providing folks with high quality used furniture. In the Fall of 2022, DCI was lucky enough to partner with CFB and donate over 100 beds worth more than $50,000 to their cause.
