Humbach Education Consulting To empower students and their parents to make the best possible college choice. We believe education As an Independent Education Consultant, my job is two-fold.

One, to coach the student in finding fantastic fit college options based on a comprehensive list of thoroughly researched choices and two, to assist each student in discovering who they are and then translating their awesome self to a clean, authentic and compelling application. As many of my families have commented, I have a knack for quickly establishing rapport with my students (it helps that I’m not their mom).

🎓 Parents of college-bound students: If there is ONE thing you do before move-in day, make sure your student completes a FERPA release.

Many families don't realize that once a student enrolls in college, federal law gives them control over their educational records. Without a FERPA release on file, colleges often cannot discuss grades, financial aid, billing issues, enrollment status, or other important matters with parents.

The good news? It usually takes less than five minutes to complete through the student portal.

This isn't about hovering—it's about being able to help when your student needs support, whether it's a financial issue, academic challenge, or unexpected crisis.

Before your student heads to campus, add "FERPA release" to your college checklist.

🎓 Have you heard of "Summer Melt"?

Summer melt happens when a student commits to a college but never actually enrolls in the fall. Why? Financial aid complications, missed deadlines, housing issues, or simply feeling overwhelmed by the transition from high school to college.

Many families think the college process ends on May 1—but there's still plenty to manage throughout the summer. The good news? Summer melt can also create unexpected opportunities, as colleges may reopen spots and continue admitting students later in the season.

The lesson: Stay organized, monitor deadlines, and don't assume all college options disappear after Decision Day.

🌎 College students are paying attention to the world around them—and it's affecting more than their academic interests.

A recent study found that students with greater knowledge of climate change often experience higher levels of stress and anxiety about the future. At the same time, that awareness is also motivating many students to rethink their daily habits, academic choices, and even career paths.

For families navigating the college search, this is an important reminder: today's students aren't just choosing a major. They're looking for purpose, impact, and ways to address the challenges they see in the world.

When evaluating colleges, consider not only academic programs but also the mental health resources, support systems, and opportunities for meaningful engagement available on campus.

The future can feel overwhelming—but it can also inspire action.

I’ve recommended the University of Vermont for years—especially for outdoorsy students (hello, Colorado kids). But after a recent visit… wow. Just wow.

UVM is the kind of place that sneaks up on you. It’s absolutely idyllic—stunning setting, vibrant energy, and a campus community that actually feels connected.

Academically, it hits a sweet spot: the resources of a flagship public university with the feel of a smaller, more personal campus. It really shines in environmental studies, biological sciences, health sciences, business, and engineering—perfect for students who want rigorous academics with a hands-on, real-world edge. And sustainability? Not a buzzword here—it’s basically the campus love language.

Admissions are moderately selective (~60%), drawing bright, curious, often outdoors-loving students from all over. These are the kinds of students who can dive into a policy debate and then head straight out for a hike.

Yes, as a public university, the price tag for non-residents (~$69K) can rival private schools—but merit scholarships help take the edge off. (Think: a little maple syrup on those financial aid pancakes.)

And the vibe? Set in Burlington—arguably one of the most charming college towns in the country—UVM is laid-back, progressive, and deeply collaborative. Students here care, think, explore, and breathe fresh air while doing it.

Patagonia meets policy debate… with great coffee on the side.

Parents: before college move-in, handle this.

Once your student turns 18, you lose automatic access to their medical and academic info. In an emergency, that can mean being completely shut out.

Before dorm drop-off, make sure these are in place:
✔️ FERPA Release (access to grades/academic records)
✔️ HIPAA Authorization (access to medical info)
✔️ Advance Care Directives (health + mental health decisions)
✔️ Durable Power of Attorney (financial/legal matters)

It’s not dramatic—it’s practical. Without these, you may not be able to help when it matters most.

Care packages are nice. This is real protection.

College Scholarships (Part 2): It’s a numbers game.

Apply widely. Apply consistently. Winning a few after applying to a few? Not how this works. No shortcuts—just persistence.

Be smart with search engines: create profiles, share only what’s required, and skip the marketing spam.

Get specific. The more niche, the better—first-gen, future teacher, engineer, athlete, writer… if it describes you, there’s money out there.

Play the long game. Apply year-round—and even during college.

And don’t chase one big win. Stack smaller awards ($500, $1,000). That’s how you actually move the needle.

Go get the money.

Wondering if you’re on track for college? The College Readiness Survey is a quick, easy check-in for high school students and their parents.

The survey considers academics, life and independence skills, mental health and self care—then gives you a clear snapshot of your strengths, any gaps, and what to do next.

Simple, fast, and actually useful. A great first step toward moving forward with confidence.

Big outcomes. Small school. Real-world focus.

Champlain College quietly punches above its weight—especially for students who want career-ready skills from day one. Its nationally recognized Game Studio is a standout, fully integrating game design, development, art, and production (rare, and powerful). Beyond that, cybersecurity (NSA-designated), business, and communications all shine—built around an “Upside-Down Curriculum” that puts you in your major immediately. Translation: less fluff, more future.

Who it’s for:
Focused, hands-on students—especially creatives and tech-minded builders—who are ready to dive in early. With ~2,000 undergrads and no grad students, expect small classes and personalized support.

Admissions:
Moderately selective (~70% acceptance rate), but the right fit matters more than stats here.

Cost:
Sticker price lands in the mid-$60Ks, but merit aid is common. Still—run the numbers. Always.

The vibe:
Burlington, Vermont = lake views, coffee shops, late-night creative energy, and weekend hikes. Think collaborative, not cutthroat. Creative, not conventional.

đź’ˇ Bottom line:
If your student wants a tight-knit, career-driven experience with a strong creative-tech edge, Champlain is an underrated gem worth a serious look.

College Scholarships đź’ˇ
Outside scholarships = private money (not from colleges or the government).

Your best odds? LOCAL.
Employers. Community groups. Religious organizations. Rotary Club.

Start with your counseling office, library, and Chamber of Commerce.
Smaller pools. Better chances.

No strategy = wasted time.
Be intentional. Get results.
