Thank you West Metro Fire Rescue for sharing this. It is so important for all communities to understand what it takes to keep them safe!

Sticker shock is real. We don’t have to tell you that- prices are up everywhere.
You see it at the grocery store, when you pay for repairs or when it’s time to replace a vehicle.
West Metro is seeing it, too.
In 2018, West Metro paid $633,267 for a fire engine like this one. Today, a comparable new engine costs $1,384,099.
That’s nearly a 119% increase in nine years.
When we buy an engine, we get a lot of use out of it. At West Metro, an engine typically spends 20 years in front-line service, assigned to a station and responding to calls every day, followed by another five years as a reserve.
That’s 25 years responding to fires, medical emergencies, crashes, rescues and other calls for help.
But eventually, every engine reaches the end of its service life. And when you consider rising prices across an entire fleet- not just fire engines, but ambulances and other emergency vehicles- the costs add up quickly.
That’s why we want our community to understand what it costs to provide emergency services, how long we use the equipment we purchase and how much those costs have changed.

It’s another edition of Paramedics & Pets!
We’re celebrating National Dog Day a few days late because we were saving it for this sweet low-riding nugget. Meet Everything Bagel, also known as “EB.” EB is a 1.5-year-old Dachshund/Beagle mix who is perfecting the art of being a lap dog, as evidenced by her time hanging out with our EMT Alex.

EB was abandoned; the Animal Shelter found her as a stray. When EB first arrived at the shelter, she was scared and lonely and did her best to keep her distance from people. However, it didn't take long for this sweet girl to realize that she was finally somewhere safe. She has been making leaps and strides in meeting new people and is coming out of her shell (though she can be a bit shy at first). She is still learning about walking on a leash, but this little girl is going to make a truly excellent sidekick.

EB has done well meeting other friendly dogs here at the shelter, and the staff thinks having a confident canine companion in her forever home could be a wonderful way to help her continue building confidence and learn the ropes. Everything Bagel is learning that life can be pretty good–she's just waiting for someone to start her forever with!

Cookie’s Don’t Burn Rap Rhyme

I’m Cookie, Cookie, and I’m just fine,
I love these firefighters like they are mine.

The grass is dry and the sun sure is hot,
So please be careful whether you’re home or not.

Don’t burn that pile, don’t toss that match,
A tiny little spark can make a fire catch.

The wind starts blowing, the flames start to fly,
off go my firefighters beneath that smoky sky.

So do me a favor and listen this time
Keep my firefighters safe, because they’re all mine!
