Fire season is under way. Cheatgrass has cured out and is easily lit ablaze. Livermore Fire Department has responded to two fires primarily involving cheat grass ignited by lightning strikes in recent weeks.
Cheatgrass fires are easily put out with flapper tools and water. However, when cheatgrass has established under a Juniper or other bushes, it can act as a catalyst to light the more volatile fuels ablaze. The resulting fire often requires more resources, both in personnel and water, to control. Limbing Junipers, thinning brush, removing and/or killing cheatgrass, as well as clearing out duff under these volatile fuels can greatly reduce fire behavior and aid First Responders in stopping active fire.
