Seven steps to terminate an SC/UPC quick connector, and no fusion splicer anywhere in sight.

Boot goes on first, since you can't add it later. Strip 27mm, clean the bare fiber, then cleave between 10.5 and 11.5mm. From there you insert the fiber and watch for the micro-bend.

That slight bow is the whole thing. It's what tells you the fiber has actually reached the pre-polished stub inside the connector. No bow means no contact, and the termination is either going to test marginal or just not work. Too much bow means you overshot on the cleave and now the fiber is under stress, which shows up as loss down the road.

Release the clip, screw the boot down, and you're done. No epoxy, no polishing, no oven.

That's the appeal of mechanical connectors — about two minutes, and your crew can terminate fiber without a splicer on the truck. Good one to send to anyone you're training up.

The worst time to find out a cable is bad is after it's already in the wall.

You pull it, terminate both ends, dress it into the panel, and then nothing. Now you're chasing a problem you can't see, and nine times out of ten it was a bad termination or a bad section of the spool the whole time.

Testing takes about two minutes. Connect both ends, hit the button, watch the lights. This one covers RJ45, RJ11, RJ12, USB, and BNC, shows you straight or crossover, and works on runs up to 300 feet.

It's the least exciting tool in the bag and it saves more callbacks than anything else in there.

Crimping Cat6 and fighting eight wires into the load bar every time? Here's a trick from our tech that makes it way easier.

Load your white-striped conductors first, then cut the solid colors half an inch shorter. The bar slides right on and you're not wrestling with all eight at once.

The load bar itself is doing more than keeping things neat, too. It staggers the conductors in a hi/lo pattern, which keeps the pairs separated and lets the cable seat deeper into the plug. Less untwisted wire inside the connector means less crosstalk, and the Fluke results at the end of the video show it.

Worth sending to anyone on your crew who's still learning to terminate.
