E-waste disposal has changed. Here's what it used to look like β€” and what it looks like when it's done right.

This doesn't have to be the thing nobody wants to deal with. When it's handled right, it just gets done without causing your IT team any headaches.

Most e-waste mistakes don't happen because organizations are careless. They happen because of assumptions that seem reasonable until an auditor asks a question nobody can answer.

Here are the most common ones.

Yes, e-waste disposal is complicated β€” but Bruin makes it easy. Get in touch with us to discuss your e-waste needs.

The most common reason organizations don't deal with old electronics: they assume it's going to be complicated.

Scheduling. Logistics. Cost. Certified data destruction. Finding the right recycler. Figuring out what's even accepted.

For most of our business clients, it's simpler than they expect. Tell us what you have and where you are. We handle the rest β€” pickup included, at no cost for qualifying loads, and with no annual commitments required.

The pile in your storage room has probably been there longer than you'd like to admit. August is as good a time as any to clear it out.

Every August, the same thing happens in school districts and government agencies across New York.

New devices come in. Old ones get moved to a storage room, a closet, or a back office β€” and stay there.

Proper e-waste disposal is one of those things that's easy to deprioritize when everything else is moving. We put together a practical guide to make it easier β€” what a compliant process looks like, what documentation to have ready, and how to build a program that runs without becoming another thing on the list.

When choosing an e-waste recycler, "we recycle responsibly" isn't enough. Anyone can say it.

A NYS DEC certification is what proves it.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYS DEC) holds certified recyclers to strict standards for how electronic waste is handled, processed, and reported. It means the equipment you hand over is tracked, processed lawfully, and kept out of landfills, with the state-level oversight to back it up.

Bruin has held NYS DEC certification since 2015. Millions of pounds of e-waste have been responsibly processed at our facility since. It's one of the reasons organizations across New York β€” schools, hospitals, businesses β€” trust us with their equipment.

When you're evaluating a recycler, ask for their certifications. A legitimate partner will have them ready. We do.

Mid-year is a good time to ask: do you actually know where all your retired IT equipment is?

According to Flexera's 2024 State of ITAM Report, 53% of IT teams report challenges maintaining complete visibility of their technology assets. Without that visibility, decommissioned devices sit in storage untracked, undocumented, and quietly creating compliance and data security exposure.

Bruin helps businesses close that gap β€” compliantly, securely, and sustainably.

For data destruction engagements, we confirm destruction so every device is accounted for. For broader cleanouts, we provide aggregate reporting that gives your team the visibility it needs.

Mid-year planning is already on the calendar. Make sure your retired hardware is handled before Q3 adds more to the pile.

Not every piece of equipment is just equipment.

A few years ago, Bruin received a batch of retired government electronics. Inside was a broken digital camera that had belonged to Barack Obama when he was a U.S. Senator.

We could have shredded it. Someone may have just tossed in in the bin. Instead, we recognized what it was, recovered it, and sold it at auction for $4,000.

That's the difference between a recycler and a partner who pays attention. Every device that comes through our doors gets evaluated for data security, for residual value, and sometimes, for history.
