As Michigan temperatures begin to drop, these insects start searching for warm, protected places to spend the winter.
🔎 Why Are They Showing Up?
☀️ They're Looking for Warmth! Boxelder bugs love soaking up the sun! You'll often find large groups gathering on the south and west sides of homes where the afternoon sunshine keeps surfaces warm.
🏠 They're Searching for Shelter! As temperatures drop, boxelder bugs look for cracks and crevices around windows, doors, siding, and foundations where they can hide during the colder months.
🌳 Nearby Trees Attract Them! Boxelder bugs commonly feed on seeds from boxelder and other maple trees. If you have these trees around your property, you may notice more activity.
🐞 They Can Become a Nuisance! Although boxelder bugs don't typically bite, damage your home, or reproduce indoors, they can gather in large numbers and sometimes leave stains on walls, curtains, and furniture.
💡 Did You Know? Boxelder bugs can remain hidden inside wall voids throughout winter and suddenly appear indoors on warmer, sunny days!
🚫 How Can You Help Prevent Them?
