A new apartment building backed by a Detroit rapper could soon rise in the city's booming Brush Park neighborhood.
Terry Wallace, better known as Tee Grizzley, is behind a proposed $12 million, five-story mixed-use project on a vacant city-owned lot at the northeast corner John R and Watson streets.
The area just north of downtown has become home to scores of new mixed-income housing units — from $1 million condos to affordable senior apartments — and new retail and restaurants.
Wallace’s proposed development is slated to go before the city’s Historic District Commission next week for approval. It would include around 35 units — mostly studio and one-bedroom units — with 20% of the units being affordable to those earning $56,560, or 80% of the area median income in Wayne County.
“Detroit raised me — I’m a west side kid, and I’m passionate about bringing mixed-income housing to my city,” Wallace said in a statement shared with Crain’s. “The 205 Watson project is about building safe, quality housing for everybody; that respects longtime residents and welcomes new neighbors — building opportunity without pushing people out.”
