The man was a beast ! We will Miss you Hawk

This morning at 4:00 a.m. we lost a member of our Big Mountain Disposal family, Hawk Fortman.

Hawk worked with us for 13 years and was a huge part of our growth. Back when the company was small and we were just running a couple trucks, Hawk and I would split the routes — I’d run one truck and he’d run the other. There were even mornings he would take my daughter to school in the garbage truck before starting his route. That’s just the kind of guy he was — you didn’t just work with Hawk, you lived life alongside him.

Over the years he built friendships all along his route. Customers looked forward to seeing him and many would leave snacks and drinks out for him because they appreciated the way he treated them. He always went the extra mile for the people he served.

Hawk loved camping and fishing, and he was very proud of his kids. He talked about them often. He also always had a story — sometimes funny, sometimes wild — and you truly never knew what he was going to say next. There was never a dull moment when Hawk was around, and he kept all of us laughing more days than not.

He worked up until last winter, and his absence on the truck was felt immediately. Today we feel it even more.

Hawk wasn’t just an employee. He was part of the foundation of this company and part of our everyday lives. We are grateful for the years we had with him and for the role he played in helping build Big Mountain Disposal into what it is today.

He will be deeply missed by all of us here and by many customers who came to know him as a friend.
