I have been in the artifact collecting community as well as the flintknapping scene for nearly thirty years. Having been a knapper all these years, I’ve acquired a unique perspective for knowing what a dinged or missing area of an artifact should look like. Through these many years, the study of different point types, manufacturing strategies and re-sharpening techniques has been an integral part of my flintknapping experience. And those same strategies and techniques apply to restoration of artifacts. I have restored many of my own artifacts as well as many of my friends’ and acquaintances’. So far, my restoration services have been found by word of mouth and by meeting people at artifact shows where many have inquired about a website…so here it is! Please keep in mind that some pieces do not make good candidates for restoration, such as:
Generally, all artifacts of which 50% or more is missing. Impact fractured tips with bend breaks that caused a large chip to extend backwards toward base. Pieces with very small areas missing may not warrant restoration. Lastly, you may want to consider the value of the artifact compared to the cost of restoration. Your artifact restoration can be completely reversed or removed at a later date should you ever decide to do so. Your artifact will be repaired to a before broken condition and the repair will be painted to match the original piece.
