Defendant Sentenced to 7 Years to Life for Attempted Murder and Arson in Lodi Attack

On June 22, 2026, the Honorable Judge Barrera sentenced defendant Louie Martinez to 7 years to life in state prison for First Degree Attempted Murder and a consecutive 8-month term for Arson of Property, following his conviction by a San Joaquin County jury.
The case arose from a horrific incident that occurred in downtown Lodi in February 2025. The victim, an elderly woman experiencing homelessness, was asleep on the ground near an intersection when Martinez approached and deliberately ignited her bedding using a flammable object. She awoke in terror as the flames spread to her hand and quickly surrounded her, engulfing her personal belongings.
Fire personnel responded rapidly and extinguished the blaze, preventing what could have been a fatal outcome. Although the victim sustained injuries, she recovered and courageously testified during the trial.
Investigators with the Lodi Police Department identified Martinez through surveillance footage obtained from the area. The video captured Martinez holding a flammable object, setting the fire, and kicking the flames toward the victim, causing her belongings to ignite. Officers located Martinez nearby shortly after the incident and found two lighters and a canister of butane in his possession. His shoes displayed burn marks and partial melting, which he attempted to explain as the result of smoking ci******es. Martinez, who was seated in a wheelchair at the time of the offense, admitted he knew someone was present where he started the fire.

“Justice does not erase the trauma suffered by the victim, but today’s sentence provides accountability and protects the public from a dangerous offender,” said District Attorney Ron Freitas. “We are grateful for the victim’s strength, the jury’s careful consideration of the evidence, and the dedication of everyone involved in bringing this case to a successful conclusion.”

Scott Sherman Sentenced to 50 Years to Life Plus 3 Years for First-Degree Murder Following Drug- and Alcohol-Fueled Shooting

A San Joaquin County jury previously found Scott Sherman, 40, guilty of first-degree murder for the fatal shooting of Felix Makinano in Lodi on October 3, 2023. Today, Sherman was sentenced to 50 years to life plus 3 years in state prison, the maximum allowable by law. The jury had also found true a firearm enhancement under Penal Code § 12022.53(d) and convicted Sherman of carrying a loaded firearm (P.C. § 25850) and possession of a controlled substance (H&S § 11377, misdemeanor).

According to evidence presented at trial, Sherman had been drinking and consuming psilocybin (“magic mushrooms”) at his Lodi apartment before meeting the victim outside Garry’s Lounge. Witness testimony revealed that Sherman became paranoid, armed himself with a firearm, and ultimately shot Mr. Makinano twice in the back as the unarmed victim attempted to flee.

Following the shooting, Sherman returned to his apartment, turned off the lights, and attempted to disable his video surveillance system before being taken into custody by the Lodi Police Department SWAT team.

“This sentencing brings justice and accountability for the family of Felix Makinano, who was tragically shot and killed in a senseless, drug- and alcohol-fueled act of violence,” said District Attorney Ron Freitas. “Scott Sherman has now been held fully accountable for this crime. This outcome reflects our commitment to protecting our community and ensuring that those who commit such heinous acts face severe consequences.”

Law enforcement officials detained a man suspected of vandalism who stole a Sacramento Police Department patrol vehicle Friday afternoon, officials said.

Sacramento police said officers just after 12:30 p.m. went to Marysville Boulevard and South Avenue for a report of vandalism in the area. When they tried to detain the man, he managed to escape and drove off in a marked cruiser, prompting a pursuit. The California Highway Patrol took over the chase, which continued onto the freeway before ending in the Lodi area. At 1:36 p.m., officers were seen chasing the stolen vehicle going southbound on Highway 99 in the Galt area of Sacramento County. Minutes later, a CHP officer tried catching up to the stolen cruiser, presumably to do a PIT maneuver.

At 1:42 p.m., one of the officers tried a PIT in the Lodi area of San Joaquin County, hitting the back of the stolen cruiser. It did not stop the driver, and they kept fleeing. There appears to be rear-end bumper damage now on the vehicle.

At 1:47 p.m., a CHP cruiser hits the back of the stolen vehicle, but it does not stop the vehicle. About a minute later, the man motions his hands out of the vehicle, lets the cruiser slow down, and then he gets out of the vehicle and lies on the ground.

Officers circle him and take him into custody on the highway near Turner Road. All but one lane of southbound Highway 99 is blocked while officers investigate. #916

A man who previously lived in Lodi and South Lake Tahoe was convicted Thursday for a series of crypto schemes following an eight-day federal trial.
The jury found 53-year-old Daniel Chartraw guilty of what prosecutors described as a “wide-ranging” list of crimes involving cryptocurrency companies, a sham business venture and false investment guarantees that defrauded investors of almost $1 million between March 2021 and February 2022.
At the trial, held in the Eastern District of California, prosecutors showed that Chartraw and an associated controlled several financial companies including “Crypto-Pal LLC” and “TDA Global LLC.” He claimed that Crypto-Pal was a crypto trading company and that people would have guaranteed high returns with no risk, along with other false claims.

During the months-long series of scams, Chartraw talked with investors over phone calls, texts, emails and virtual meetings, often using aliases including “Leonard” or “Leon,” prosecutors said.

Chartraw gained victims’ trust, using fake account statements and other lies and misrepresentations, prosecutors said. In some cases, people were referred to Chartraw through friends or family and convinced to transfer cryptocurrencies or cash by false promises that their money would be traded.
However, Chartraw did not invest the funds as he claimed, and investors never received any returns. Prosecutors said the total loss approached $1 million.
The FBI investigated the crypto fraud, and Assistant U.S. Attorneys Jessica Delaney and J. Douglas Harman prosecuted the case. Chartraw is set to be sentenced Sept. 28, where he faces up to 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine for each count.
