Legacy isn’t just a catch phrase for ‘older people’, it’s what every big hearted human should think about before going to bed every night.

Legacy is the world that we will live in tomorrow and the philosophy by which our children & grandchildren & all future generations will live by.

If “Legacy” is not written, then how can the philosophy of business, family, or civic responsibility be established and organized?

If not for a writer, than who will guide the process.

YOU! You are the writer. You are the one appointed to this time.

Step up and think about the future....unless you believe that the future will right itself without our participation, planning, and guidance.

Retirement guidance cannot be determined within the confines of a spreadsheet or financial planning software. My grandfather understood this instinctively and imparted that wisdom to me. I continue to share that same timeless advice with my clients today.

Every one....every winemaker as well as every wine consumer, wants to know what drives the qualities of a great winemaker. It's worth reading, worth noting, and worthy of attention for us who are still striving to do our best.

If you have not or at least believe you have not fulfilled your best 'at your professional craft', then 'studying' the best will always get you closer to your dream.....

1) Be open to change;
2) Don't accept less than where you want to be;
3) Don't let raw 'ambition' alone drive your commitments;
4) Kill your ego;
5) Give others who have helped you along the way credit for what they have assisted you to become;
6) Strive to learn something new every day;
7) Look to grow in small, incremental ways rather than huge leaps to 'stardom';
8) Keep moving when you are tired of being beaten down (as you will emerge again);
9) Be aware of your bad habits and replace them with good habits;
10) If you spend time with professionals who are not 'better' than you, change your social habits.

Every Family or Company should think about 'branding', whether or not you have a product to sell.

Each family member is a component of the family brand. If your family has a product to sell, then the elements of the family brand products should align within the 'persons' of the family brand.

For example: If any or all of the family members use digital platforms to promote (i.e.: LinkedIn, Twitter, Instagram, etc.), then using brand elements or logos within the family member social platforms will help solidify the 'brand' and cross promote it.

It is difficult in our 'individualistic' society to integrate a consistency of family brand elements within the personal life social structures of family members but when this happens, you will see a much stronger and more unified brand 'message'.

Family businesses that leverage this principle are much more likely to succeed into the next generation as they seek to unite in all aspects of their business and personal lives.

There is strength in unity and weakness in division.

I have several hand saws that I’m currently designing a shadow box for. They were my grandfather’s saws from his Hollywood set building days as a ‘prop’ manager, building sets for Gunsmoke, Gilligan’s Island, Bewitched, and several other popular Hollywood shows of the ‘1950’s-1970’s. What I learned from my grandfather was how to take something that was extremely rough and build something refined and purposeful out of it. ‘Harry’ didn’t sit me down for fireside chats, he simply did his work and I watched....and learned. Lessons we leave to our children and grandchildren can simply be the constructive work we do, building useful and purpose products and processes that there simply witness us completing.

The only reason why generational businesses do not survive long is not about skill in business. It is about skill in relationships. Something that most of us struggle with and struggle miserably.

But there is a way to increase the probability of generational business success and reduce the risk of failure.....if that is what is desired.

If you could choose the attributes of a mentor or coach, what exactly would they consist of?

4-decades of wine.....sometimes it's hard to believe but then again, it seems like yesterday I was that 18 year old union cellar man soaking it up like a sponge.......

So what's the goal today?

Answer:

1) To share and give away as much information as I have learned;
2) To remain a student realizing how much I have yet to learn;
3) To assist those who believe that having good counsel around them is a requirement of building a great business into the next generation.
