A lovely surprise in my inbox:
"Jill, I had to draft a persuasive, professional letter from scratch today. It felt like a daunting task until I pulled out my notes from your presentation for the Leadership Seminar last September. Your presentation writing guide helped me focus my thoughts and keep moving forward instead of staring at a blank screen. It helped me write effectively and efficiently. Thank you for your presentation!"

A beautiful style sheet compiled by a client as we work together to define her personal brand. The words on the left describe the qualities that are important to her to convey. Does your brand match your values, skills, and personality?

Had a great time last night teaching dining etiquette to more than 100 business students at the University of Chicago! So nice to be back with them face-to-face!

Do I always have to turn my camera on? I’m asked that question a lot. I tell people, in most cases, yes. BUT here are 3 times it’s okay to turn the camera off:

Eating – If you’re having meetings back-to-back, you’re going to need to eat sometime. Turn the camera off so others don’t watch you attack that burger or slurp your soup.

Multitasking – If you’re not an active participant in the meeting or on the agenda, and you need to check email, read some docs, or have a side conversation, turn the camera off. Your activities won’t grab attention and be a distraction to others.

Time Zone Difference – If it’s 8 am in Chicago, but you’re in Hawaii, people will understand that you don’t have yourself camera-ready at that hour.

The best replacement for your face is going to be a professional headshot. It’s less distracting to have a photo of you replace your image than to have your printed name pop up on the screen. We’ve been on these platforms (and LinkedIn) long enough now and should have a good photo ready to plug in for any work situation.

Civility begins when we believe—and behave—like we’re NOT the center of the universe, but the small cog in the larger wheel that we actually are. Choosing civility means you choose to do the right thing for others—for your colleagues, corporation, community. As more and more people return to the office, it’s a good time to do a reset on how we plan to interact with each other. Look at this time as an opportunity for a fresh start, a “do over”, a chance to create the civil and tolerant workplace we all desire.

Can’t believe I started my business 36 years ago! A huge thank you to all the wonderful organizations and individuals I’ve had the pleasure of working with through the years. Why am I celebrating 36? Because I forgot to celebrate 35 last year!
