In 1996, with forty years of winemaking experience, Jim and Mary Dierberg’s dream of producing wines worthy of their 250 year plan became a reality. After a long search through France and Napa, while learning the craft and making wine in the mid-west, they discovered the potential of Santa Barbara’s cool coastal valleys. The family planted two estates - first their namesake Dierberg Vineyard and l

ater Drum Canyon Vineyard - both under their DIERBERG label. These estates, along with the family’s iconic warm climate site Star Lane Vineyard, culminated in a trio of peerless properties in Santa Barbara County. Driving upon the former dude and cattle ranch - Star Lane Ranch, Mary Dierberg recalled: “We immediately knew that we wanted this amazing ranch”. With wisdom from patience, a 250 year plan, the certainty of passion, and some of the best vineyard consultants in the business, the Dierbergs planted Star Lane Vineyard with Bordeaux varietals, based on their con dence in those grapes’ ability to soar in this unique microclimate.

Calling the pick. One of the most important decisions a winemaker makes is knowing when the fruit is ready to come off the vine. Sugar matters, but it’s only part of the story. Acidity, flavor, seed and skin maturity, weather, and the style of wine all factor into the decision.

Sometimes the difference between “not quite” and “go” is just a day or two. That moment—when everything lines up—is when the winemaker calls the pick.

First Fruit: An unusually warm start to the year set the clock early on the 2026 vintage. Early bud break, followed by a warm spring and periods of temperatures reaching the high 80s in the Sta. Rita Hills and the high 90s and low 100s in Happy Canyon, pushed the season forward at both estates.

The result is a remarkably compressed harvest: Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon are arriving at the winery alongside Chardonnay, bringing varieties from two very different vineyards and growing climates to the cellar at nearly the same moment.

Attention Members: It’s official, our all new Spring Member Pickup Events are now live to book:

Join us at Drum Canyon Vineyard on one of four Saturdays in April from 4:00 to 6:00 PM for a relaxed afternoon of live music, sweeping Sta. Rita Hills views, small bites from 805 Charcuterie, and time to pick up your spring shipment. April 4th 11th 18th or 25th.

All members receive access for two adults, with additional guests welcome for a small fee. We kindly ask that you select one Saturday and RSVP in advance.
