We sampled at Duas Terras Vineyard this week to get an idea of when we might harvest our Alvarinho.
When we sample at the vineyard, we’re not looking for the sweetest or prettiest berries, we’re trying to understand the vineyard as a whole. We sample both sides of every row because sunlight, wind exposure, and temperature can create a difference in ripening. We also pick entire clusters from representative vines throughout the block. Whole clusters provide a more accurate reflection of the vineyard by capturing the natural variation in berry size and ripeness.
From these samples, we evaluate sugar levels, acidity, berry flavor, seed maturity, skin tannins, texture, and overall vine balance. While the lab numbers are important, the taste of the fruit tells a more complete story. We’ll be picking the Alvarinho soon, possibly in the next week!
