A lot of us think we’re listening when we’re really just getting our response ready.

Good listening takes a little more intention.

Try this in your next conversation:

🔹 Reflect back what you heard
🔹 Ask a question before jumping in with a solution
🔹 Give the conversation a few seconds of silence before you respond

Small shifts like these can completely change the way people feel in a conversation.

Listening is a skill, and like any skill, it gets stronger with practice.

Leadership is often less about one big moment and more about the small things we choose to do every day.

The conversation we take time to have.
The person we encourage.
The question we ask instead of assuming.
The way we show up when things feel hard.

Those moments may not feel extraordinary on their own, but together, they shape teams, cultures, and relationships.

Great leadership doesn’t always have to be loud or impressive. Sometimes it simply looks like consistently caring about the people around you.

Coaching and feedback are both important, but they do very different things.

Sometimes your team needs to hear what you’re seeing.

And sometimes they need you to ask the kind of questions that help them see it for themselves.

That’s where coaching can be so powerful.

Instead of jumping straight to advice or solving the problem for someone, coaching gives them space to think, reflect, and build confidence in their own decision-making.

The goal isn’t to have all the answers.

It’s to know when to share what you know and when to help someone discover what they already know.

It’s easy to become the person everyone comes to for answers.

Especially when you’re the leader. Someone brings you a problem, and your instinct is to fix it, give advice, or tell them what you would do.

And sometimes that’s exactly what they need. But not always. Sometimes the better leadership move is to ask one more question.

“What do you think?”

“What have you already tried?”

“What options are you considering?”

“What feels like the best next step?”

Those few extra minutes can do something giving the answer can’t: help someone strengthen their own thinking. Because good coaching isn’t about withholding support.

It’s about helping people become more confident and capable without always needing you to solve the problem for them. What question could you ask more often before jumping in with the answer?
