Hi Friends! I have been asked by several folks if I am aware of what's happening to families legally seeking asylum at the border (yes, I am) and what can we - average citizen - do about it. I have compiled a small list of things we can do. Please know it is not extensive and as always I encourage you to reach out to groups in your local communities who might also be acting on this.
As of June 9th, over 2300 kids have been separated from their families. I don't care what your political affiliation is or what your stance on the legality of people being here in the US might be - there is no justification (or necessity) for separating families.
1. Call your elected officials. If you don't know who they are, go here: https://www.govtrack.us/congress/members
2. Please give or volunteer for any organization working to protect the children and reunite them with their families. This may include the ACLU, RAICES, and other civil rights groups. Also, please check out ActBlue which has a full list of groups actively working to help separated families. ActBlue site: https://secure.actblue.com/donate/kidsattheborder
3. For those friends on border states, try to volunteer - especially if you speak another language. If you do volunteer, share your stories - A LOT. Reach out to media, use social media and talk to groups. And for the friends not on border states - rally, take to the streets, protest, and join groups that are doing something. There are MANY forms of protest so again, reach out to your local community, social groups, nonprofits, and faith groups to see what they are doing.
