Wrist based fitness trackers have improved a lot over the years, and I recently put my garmin fenix 8 watch to the test against a wahoo chest-strap heart monitor on a recent mountain bike ride. Although chest strap tracking is the gold standard, I was pleasantly surprised how closely the watch tracked the HR spikes that are common in mountain biking. It also showed my max and average HR were just one beat apart.
Whether using a tracker or "perceived exertion," working on improving your VO2 max - along with a strength training and mobility routine-is pivotal to healthy aging.
