We are extremely grateful and completely blown away by the outpouring of support shown by our community this past week. It is truly amazing…We were able to team up with our good friends over at Cooper’s Tavern to deliver all of your donations to those in need that have been affected by Hurricane Helene. We leave tomorrow morning, 10/4/24 to make the delivery.

We will convoy with Spokes of Hope to the delivery site in Western North Carolina, from that point the supplies will be dispersed to those in need via helicopters and atvs.

This community of ours and many more have provided those affected with not only donations and supplies, but with Hope in such dire times.

Thank you again coopers tavern for allowing us to be apart of something so amazing. God is good.

Living Water : Surf Instructor

I love my summer job! I get to teach kids how to surf at surf camps as well as adults during private lessons.

So much fun. I’m reminded everyday that learning little things and making small adjustments have a huge impact in the progress toward catching waves without an instructor’s help. The basics don’t change from lesson to lesson, but how an individual learns from instruction and correction does. People learn in different ways. The way students grasp concepts through trial and error, success and failure is always unique. What makes all the difference in the world is those who “want” to learn and “want” to receive the coaching. Attitude can change everything.

There is one thing that does not change across all levels of surfing ability: the need for instruction and encouragement to take the next step toward becoming better. Even the pros have coaches! It is easy to see mistakes others make and offer help and provide a solution.

The challenge for most of us is two fold: are we willing to receive constructive criticism? Are we willing to humble ourselves and ask for help?

On a recent trip to Central America I was getting frustrated with not completing a maneuver. I was watching some friends pull off this basic move and comparison began to set in. Comparison kills contentment, btw. So I did what I probably should have done years ago. I swallowed my pride and paddled over and just asked.

The friend, a much better surfer, asked some questions and gave me a potential solution. What I thought would have been embarrassing just needed a simple act of humility. The result? I took his advice to draw out my bottom turn just a little bit longer and bam! Literally “Bam!” The attack on the lip was cleaner and the re-entry more successful leading to a better approach to the next section of the wave. Wow! Just like that, I saw my need for change, met it with a little humility, then added the practical application to the situation which led to progress!

Isn’t that just like our spiritual lives? We tend to hold on to patterns of thinking, speaking, and acting that are wrong. We know it and lets be honest - others see it too. A simple act of humility and seeking counsel, advice, rebuke and instruction sprinkle in with some obedience and practice makes a huge difference in the outcome.

What is maneuver is off in your life? Is there a pattern of thinking, speaking, or doing that you know the Lord is wanting you to humble yourself about and then set up a conversation with a trusted, godly friend? What are you waiting for? God’s wanting to set you up for the next section of life so He can throw buckets of joyful spray through you! “But He gives more grace. Therefore it says, ‘God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.’” James 4:6 (read through verse 10). Honesty + Humility + Grace = More Spray for Jesus

Living Water: Renewal Through Repair

Recently, I was repairing one of my boards that I love to ride. In fact, to this day it is my favorite board that I have ever owned. I have such a love for this board because of the countless, incredible rides I have caught on it. The only major downside to this board is, well… It’s a be**er. It wasn’t always like that. The slightest bit of de-lamination here and there went unchecked. A minor crack in the nose was un repaired. And a few pressure dings eventually opened – which all lead to its current state.

I started by assessing every spot that needed attention, one repair at a time. Countless hours went into filling holes, patching cracks and sanding. With all the repairs combined, I had about 3 or 4 days into it when it was all said and done. I was so pumped to ride it again. To me, it was perfect even though it looked worse than it did before all the repairs.

I was reminded of the passage in James which talks about looking into a mirror and then forgetting what you look like right after. In a way that is how my favorite board ended up the ugliest one in the quiver. For so long I had gotten used to looking at the board and forgotten what spots needed repairs. I became so comfortable with leaving the damage alone because there was so much of it, I didn't see how bad it had become.

James 1:22-25 says, “Obey God's message! Don't fool yourselves by just listening to it. If you hear the message and don't obey it, you are like people who stare at themselves in a mirror and forget what they look like as soon as they leave. But you must never stop looking at the perfect law that sets you free. God will bless you in everything you do, if you listen and obey, and don't just hear and forget.”

The key phrase that I take away from this verse is “If” you listen and obey. This should motivate us to listen and obey the word of God. We should take the repairs we need to God so He can work on our lives. His blessings for each of us are beyond our best dreams “If” we listen and obey. Lean in and let go a little more. Don’t do what I did and get comfortable with damage that is fixable.
